Bail reduced for man accused of robbery in Paia | News, Sports, Jobs

lfujimoto@mauinews.com WAILUKU Bail was reduced to $7,500 for a man charged with robbery for allegedly punching another man while stealing his truck in Paia. Mark Fisher, 51, has pleaded not guilty to second-degree robbery, first-degree unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle, unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle and second-degree terroristic threatening. During a court hearing Tuesday, Deputy Prosecutor Johann Smith asked for Fisher’s bail to remain at $20,000 for the crimes involving violence and property theft. Fisher asked to be released on supervision, with Deputy Public Defender Ben Lowenthal saying the defendant is a caretaker of property on the way to Keanae. Fisher can’t afford to post bail, Lowenthal said.

Surge testing set for Wailuku today | News, Sports, Jobs

Dec 15, 2020 Maui County will hold a COVID-19 surge testing event from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. today at the Kalana O Maui county building front lawn. To register, visit www.doineedacovid19test.com. Drive-thru testing will also be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Pauwela Cannery in Haiku. Residents do not need to have insurance or meet any criteria to get tested for free. Participants must wear a face mask and come at their scheduled time. Results will be reported the same day as testing. Minit Medical Urgent Care, which is carrying out the county-sponsored program, will also have sites open for testing in West Maui, South Maui and Central Maui from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 23.

The Maui News / MATTHEW THAYER photos Maui County is seeking to close down bars and bar service areas for two weeks to try and stop the uptick in COVID-19 cases that officials say are coming from “bar-like” behavior. Mayor Michael Victorino said the county still needs to get approval from Gov. David Ige, but if the request is granted, the shutdown would go into effect from 12:01 a.m. Saturday through Dec. 26.
