Matthew Tittor
WAILUKU A man who said he was going to stay on a beach when he arrived on Maui on a flight from Los Angeles agreed to return to the Mainland after he was arrested Tuesday for violating COVID-19 public health emergency rules.
Matthew Tittor, 42, was sentenced to a two-day jail term, which he had already served, after he pleaded no contest to the charge Wednesday afternoon in Wailuku District Court.
He appeared in court by videoconference from the Maui Police Department cellblock.
When Tittor arrived at Kahului Airport at 5:02 p.m. Tuesday, he didn’t have a negative pre-travel COVID-19 test and didn’t have a valid place of lodging to self-quarantine for 14 days, as required under Gov. David Ige’s emergency proclamation, police said.

Maui County is seeking to close down bars and bar service areas for two weeks to try and stop the uptick in COVID-19 cases that officials say are coming from “bar-like” behavior.
Mayor Michael Victorino said the county still needs to get approval from Gov. David Ige, but if the request is granted, the shutdown would go into effect from 12:01 a.m. Saturday through Dec. 26.
