Two-time former motorbike champion Toby Price is out of the Dakar Rally after the Australian took a severe blow to the head in a crash that left him in a hospital bed on Tuesday.
Price s crash on stage nine comes exactly on the first anniversary of the death of Portuguese motorcyclist Paulo Goncalves, on last year s Dakar which was also staged in Saudi Arabia.
Price had gone into the ninth stage in second place overall, a little over a minute adrift of Chilean leader Jose Ignacio Cornejo Florimo.

Joaquim Rodrigues entered the top 15 in the overall rankings to find himself in 12th place.

All the riders arrived at Neom exhausted after the 465km looping special stage on the shores of the Red Sea.
Joaquim Rodrigues finished the stage in 5 hours 20 minutes.
Harith Noah has moved into the top 30 and now sits comfortably at 25th position.

CS Santosh suffers crash in Dakar Rally, in medically-induced coma
NEW DELHI, Jan 7: Renowned Indian motorcycle racer CS Santosh suffered a crash during the ongoing Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia and was put in a medically-induced coma after being airlifted to a hospital in Riyadh.
The 37-year-old Santosh, who was representing Hero MotoSports in one of the world’s biggest rallies, suffered the crash on Wednesday.
“We are pleased to share that he has no major physical injuries except for the dislocated right shoulder and head trauma. The latest scans have also shown no major issue that could impact his full recovery,” Hero MotoSports said in a statement.
