El Alto Hombre swept past Pure Pursuit into the stretch and rolled to a 2 ¼-length victory Monday in the inaugural running of the $12,000 Caveman Stakes for 3-year-olds and up on opening night at Grants Pass Downs.
Ridden by Jose Figueroa at 126 lbs, El Alto Hombre ran five furlongs in :58.45 seconds and paid $9.20 as the second choice in the wagering.
Trained by Liz Kowalski and owned by Anthony Hoover, El Alto Hombre delivered an emotional victory for his connections Monday. David Hoover, trainer of El Alto Hombre and brother of the owner, died last week following a training accident and the horse was transferred to Kowalski s care.

Oregon s premier horse racing venue begins its 2021 spring/summer season Monday with first post 5:15 p.m. The eight-race card features two quarter horse events, six thoroughbred races and 65 total horses a solid 8.1 per race.
The $10,000 added Caveman Stakes drew a full field of 10 older horses at five furlongs including Pulpits Power, last seen winning the $20,000 Grants Pass Mile last fall. The 7-year-old gelding drew the No. 3 post position with defending riding champion Joree Scriver taking the mount.
The 17-day spring/summer meeting features Monday and Tuesday racing through July 6 (except June 14 and 15) and special holiday racing Sunday July 4 at 1 p.m.

Kwantae Jamar Hovington was taken from this earth tragically Saturday, Jan. 23, 2021, at his home in Seaford.
Kwantae, or “Tator” as he was known to his family, was a loving father, companion, son, brother, uncle, cousin and friend. He loved his family fiercely, especially his newborn baby girl, Khari Jhene’ Hovington. Kwantae was a hard worker and loved being outdoors. He had worked for Sposato Lawn Care, Grotto Pizza at the Tanger Outlets in Rehoboth Beach, Mountaire Farms in Milford, Allens Hatchery Inc. in Millsboro and had recently begun his own business venture, Miscellaneous Men Lawn Care.
Kwantae graduated from Cape Henlopen High School Class of 2010 and was well known for his talent in the sports of basketball, where he played point guard, as well as football. He began his football years playing with the youth league, Cape Sharks, and then during his high school years, he played running back, linebacker and wide receiver. He was an avid fa
