Around Town: You are what your mother made you

Around Town: You are what your mother made you By Pat Orr For the Victorville Daily Press There are exceptions to every rule, but, generally, a great deal of who you are your habits, foibles and strengths is the product of your upbringing. Central to any childhood is the influence of a mother. Changing mores and government assistance programs have made fathers optional, but mothers are still required to do the heavy lifting when it comes to child-rearing. As we age, we find ourselves either blaming or crediting our parents for how our lives turn out. For those in the “blame game,” it is instructive to examine what it required for your mother to get you to this point in life alive. What did she contribute? What did she sacrifice?

Around Town: Leaving California (for a short while)

Around Town: Leaving California (for a short while) By Pat Orr For the Victorville Daily Press Last week, I left California for Arizona. Many who read this column will take joy in that news. Unfortunately for those folks, I came back. It was our first post-COVID foray more than 50 miles from home. We have relatives in Arizona, one who just relocated months ago and others who are long-time residents. We had long-overdue promises to visit each of them. I was eager to visit another border state to assess how they were dealing with the “lockdown,” immigration and the impact of the changes that 2020 brought to us all. Arizona is a state that seems to slowly be slipping away from conservative voters as more Californians rush to relocate there, taking liberal views with them. I found a surprising quasi-conservative attitude on the part of most of the Arizonans I spoke with.

Around Town: Let s tear up the roots of political weeds

Around Town: Let s tear up the roots of political weeds By Pat Orr For the Victorville Daily Press In the New Testament, Timothy says “the love of money is the root of all evil.” This saying is often misquoted when three words “the love of” are left out. Intrinsically, money is not evil. It is simply a device created to smooth the exchange of goods. It’s much easier than, say, offering up goats or a day’s work in the field as our forefathers may have. Conversely, one can easily make the case that the love of money can be evil. The pursuit of money can lead to corrupt morals, behavior, violence and bad decisions. Case in point: The unabashed love politicians have for union money. The mother’s milk of politics is cash.
