Voters hit the ballot yesterday. The results from siouxlands elections coming up. An increase in car thefts has sioux city on high alert and a preview of tonights Country Music awards all this morning. Jessica rae northwest iowa voters hit the polls yesterday to elect mayors and City Council Members to represent siouxland sioux city has about 47thousand registered voters. But less than 3 thousand people cast a ballot in this election. Woodbury county auditor pat gill says, those numbers werent suprising because he wasnt expecting a large turnout. But after a day of voting, it was mayor bob scott. Who was elected to another four year term after running un opposed. He collected. Two thousand. And 87 votes. Scott. A stolen red Nissan Altima was traveling at a high rate of speed on tuesday when it rammed the front of an suv that was backing out of a driveway. Shane stapleton, owner of shanes towing, has towed many stolen cars found in bizarre places, i actually had to take a payloader to get it out of there. It was in like a twenty foot hole. So we had to push about 3 trees out of the way and then hook up chains to it and just start pulling it out, said shane stapleton, owner of shanes towing. This truck was found by the police with stolen plates. Stapleton mentioned that he gets calls almost every day to have stolen vehicles towed. Advising people to take steps to prevent these thefts from continuing. Jenna though this is the time of year when temperatures go down and then so usually does crime. That doesnt seem to be happening this year. Reporter rachel ramos tells us about the rise in car thefts in sioux city. Rachel jenna, tim, there has been a dramatic increase in the recorded amount of stolen vehicles over the past several weeks. I spoke with detective jeff harstad of the Sioux City Police deptment who filled us in on why there has been a sudden spike. These recent Motor Vehicle thefts have been primarily occuring within the morningside area. The local law enforement has opened a few doors to a couple theories on why people have been chosing to steal cars more recently. We have people who have been stealing vehicles for financial gain and then were also having people stealing vehicles for joyriding purposes, said detective jeff harstad of Sioux City Police department. Im tim seaman jenna and im Jenna Rehnstrom the man and woman involved in a bad car crash with a stolen car this afternoon. Have died from their injuries. Tim witnesses say the car went airborne on 25th street as it flew over a steep hill. We have more details tonight in our top story. Jenna heres what the car looked like when it finally stopped after hitting a tree. The red nissan altima. That was reported stollen last thursday. Flipped on its top after striking two other cars. The accident happened near the corner of 25th and morgan streets on the northside. The 34yearold driver and his 28 yearold female passager had to be cut out of the car and were rushed to the hospital.
