A Parow regional court magistrate described Amaal Jantjies, a suspect in the murder of Lieutenant-Colonel Charl Kinnear, as having deep roots in the Cape Town underworld before denying her application for bail on Wednesday, 25 May.
Zane Kilian is one of the accused in the September 2020 assassination of former Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) section head Lieutenant-Colonel Charl Kinnear in Cape Town. One of Kilian’s co-accused is alleged underworld kingpin, Nafiz Modack.
On Monday 24 May, Western Cape High Court judge Ashley Binns-Ward dismissed Kilian’s bail appeal application. The ruling ratified an earlier decision by magistrate Nonkosi Saba on 18 March 2020 denying Kilian bail.
Although Kilian was not the person who shot Kinnear in front of his house in Gearing Street, Bishop Lavis, on 18 September 2020, the state contends that Kilian’s electronic surveillance of the detective’s phone played a vital role in the execution of his murder.
Before the failed five attempts on the life of Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) Lieutenant Charl Kinnear in November 2019, alleged underworld figure Nafiz Modack had sent a picture of the policeman and his home to Amaal Jantjies, who is accused of orchestrating the hand grenade attack on Kinnear’s home.
Kinnear knew of this before the failed hand grenade incident at his home in Bishop Lavis on 23 November 2019. The next attack on Friday, 18 September 2020 outside his home was lethal.
This evidence and further voice recordings relating to the five assassination attempts on Kinnear in November 2019 are contained in the affidavit compiled by Warrant Officer Trevor Thomas Shaw.

Cape Town â The family of slain 33-year-old Vuyokazi Dzoyi who was allegedly stabbed to death by an intimate partner more than a year ago, have alleged police bungled the case as the matter was struck from the court roll.
Dzoyiâs sister, Bulelwa, said the only witness decided not to co-operate after the investigating officer from Langa allegedly missed several appointments with him.
âAt first the witness was so co-operative, he told us over and over again that he was willing to give his evidence.
âAfter many failed attempts to meet with the investigating officer, he decided that this was a waste of his time as the police did not seem interested in his statement.
The charges involve an alleged hand grenade murder attempt and conspiring to kill a lawyer.
Security is expected to be tight, as an Anti-Gang Unit member has also been drawn into the case.
The Blue Downs Regional Court will hear a bail application on Friday involving controversial businessman Nafiz Modack and several other co-accused.
Modack, an alleged underworld kingpin, faces a raft of charges, including alleged gang activity, being part of a hand grenade plot against slain Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) detective Charl Kinnear, and a shooting at the home of Cape Town lawyer, William Booth.
For security purposes, Modack and his co-accused were moved for one consolidated bail application.
