listen to mccarthy s speech overnight and it really sounded to me like he was prioritizing investigating democrats instead of legislating for the american people. here is a preview. we will hold the swamp accountable, from the withdrawal of afghanistan, to the origins of covid. to that weaponization of the fbi. let me be very clear, we will use the power of the purse, and the power of the subpoena to get the job done. andy, this is how speaker mccarthy uses very precious time last night, is this is what we should expect when it comes to the mccarthy agenda? this is what they have been promising throughout the entire midterm elections, and this is what they will be more able to do, it took five days for a speaker vote that is typically a ceremonial thing, they re not gonna be able to pass very much, if this trend continues but they will be able to oversight
that has been separated from the day-to-day operations at the white house. there have been private meetings between the members of this team and the various agencies that look like they are going to come under scrutiny from house republicans. when you talk to officials at the white house, they acknowledge, one, that they know this is coming. many are veterans. the obama administration dealt with this when republicans took control of the house in 2011. but also recognition they need to be prepared for whatever is coming. and that means trying to do as much work in advance as possible. a number of the lawyers that have been brought in are long-time veterans of oversight investigations, of dealing with capitol hill investigations. and they appear to be prepared. they just submitted a letter to the two lawmakers expected to lead the committees in the republican house majority, saying they are going to need to resubmit their requests for investigatory documents when they take over it. it s
rosenthal. great to have you all here. margaret, let s start first with you. as i mentioned the gop taking control of the house in mere days. timing everything here. the democrats releasing these at the last minute they kind of could. we know that republicans are planning for a lot of oversight investigations but is there any indication that they ll try to push back on this specifically? i think they re going to message around it but we ve already seen that. but republicans have an opportunity, if they want to, they could push to put this in legislation so future presidents, including democratic presidents, will be required to release this. that is not where their messaging is at right now and it might never get there. are they going to use this to try to require more disclosure from joe biden and from everyone in joe biden s family. probably. but there is a difference between running for president for the united states and being related to a candidate has long
are only an individual member of congress. you don t get to ask the white house to hand over anything you want and expect a response to that, the way that you might next year, as the chairman of the committee with oversight. but i think that from what we are hearing from the white house officials, and those close to biden, is that the administration is likely to really put the investigations next year into two different buckets, and to treat them differently. the oversight investigations into things like the pullout from afghanistan, into the situation on the border, other policy matters, those white house officials consider to largely be fair game. they re not happy about the fact that there s going to be this, you know, magnifying glass on everything that has happened inside the white house. but they understand that that is part of their responsibility as to the response to that. the hunter biden stuff, the stuff that is in the bucket of family and personal stuff that
further that point the gop is going to take over the house just here in a few days, they had tried, tillis and sinema, snarts tillis and sinema had tried to do something at this at the end of that lame duck session. does it look promising at all to you, from where you sit, that this gets addressed by congress? it s hard to see now with the changing majority as well and just when you look at the fact that we haven t been able to see meaningful immigration reform in previous administrations. i think it s reasonable to have doubt that at least in the immediate months that they could come forward with a proposal, especially when the loudest voices in the room, you re hearing more so an emphasis on oversight investigations, you re hearing that it may be more likely we see potential investigations into the homeland security secretary, maybe him even call down to congress as well. immigration at this point and the border is still one of the political vulnerabilities of the white house and s
