it s a very different story on the house side. house speaker kevin mccarthy tweeting and i think it s important to read this to you, quote, when republicans take back the house, we will conduct immediate oversight. attorney general garland, preserve your documents and clear your calendar. that s pretty explicit as to where they are. we also know house republicans did talk about this on a previously scheduled call earlier today, that mccarthy kicked the call off and invited jim jordan and mike turner who are the highest ranking republicans on the intel committee, the judiciary committee to talk more about this. they talked about accountability. they didn t detail what kind of oversight, but they have their eyes on the midterms and wanting to be able to conduct those oversight investigations on the doj, but again, a much more fiery response from the house side on this so far. yes, you re right. daniel, this is, as i said, unprecedented, what s going on right now, the search of a former
intentionally delete information that an investigator was seeking. the problem is, they don t have a great track record in complying or participating in their oversight investigations. they just don t like it. they have tried to block investigators a criminal investigator, special counsel, from investigating what they knew about bill clinton s extramarital activities with an intern. they were loathed to talk about that. so, they are not in a good position to say, no, no, no, no, we would never do that. but that s not true. they have not done that before. incredible. in this case, though, the basic problem is, they may not have intentionally deleted anything. but they didn t take the right steps, the correct steps to preserve basic government documents, which all federal employees are trained and how to do. and that s not something the secret service routinely required of its personnel. yeah, the timing of, it the
co-equal branch of government that can enforce its subpoenas and conduct the oversight investigations that are among its constitutional duties. jonathan, we ll snowball off of that, bennie thompson says they ll use every tool at their disposal. what s in the toolbox? i think joyce has outlined some of it here, there could be referrals for criminal charges. it certainly could lead eventually to a hefty fine or even a jail sentence for steve bannon or anyone else they choose to go after in this way. but bannon is openly defying this, even though the executive privilege argument hasn t worked out yet. in fact the current administration, the biden administration, has said they won t help the trump people with executive privilege. often presidents it s almost a courtesy to their predecessors, not always but on certain issues, to allow executive privilege to happen, to keep some things shielded. that s not going to be the case here, white house press secretary jen psaki has said repeat
quashing that subpoena. so to use a bald threat as opposed to working within the legal system, something that, by the way, we have seen republicans and democrats as well not hesitate to use, right, going to court to block what is seen as overblown oversight investigations. but that s not what is happening here. the appearance of being in many ways desperate and threatening companies that possess this information is a real bad look for mccarthy. here is a statement or the response, i should say, to mccarthy from the january 6th committee. we have asked companies not to restore records that may help answer questions for the american people. the committee s efforts will not be deterred by those who want to white wash or cover up the events of january 6th or obstruct the investigation. joyce vance, my friend, thank you as always. great to see you. in the next hour, everybody, can the white house or congress step up to protect roe v. wade, the women s health protection act which would c
