Reader reaction to news Bratts is closing Northwich store

NORTHWICH Guardian readers have been reacting to the news the town s most iconic store will be closing its doors for good. Bratts announced on Tuesday morning that it would not be re-opening the doors to its Witton Street store, a site it has occupied for more than 160 years. The business was one of those badly affected by the Storm Christoph floods in January and although there was hope it would recover and re-open, those hopes have been dashed by the news. After sharing the breaking news on our Facebook page on Tuesday morning, many of you reacted and commented, some of you recalling your fond memories of shopping at the store over the years.

Scholar-Athlete Award Recipients Announced In Class C & D EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan High School Athletic Association has selected 10 student-athletes from Class C and D member schools to receive scholarships through the MHSAA/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete Award program. Students applying for the Scholar-Athlete Award must be carrying at least a 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale) grade-point average and have previously won a letter in a varsity sport in which the Michigan High School Athletic Association sponsors a postseason tournament. Other requirements for the applicants were to show active participation in other school and community activities and produce an essay on the importance of sportsmanship in educational athletics.

Equine Insurer Sylvester Kiger Jr. Passes; Insured Triple Crown Winners Seattle Slew, Affirmed Sponsored by: Longtime Central Kentucky equine insurer Sylvester Kiger Jr. died in Lexington on Dec. 8 at the age of 86. Kiger began his career in the equine insurance business in 1962 when he was invited to join the Kentucky Insurance Agency by Leslie Combs II. He was associated with Fasig-Tipton for many years and started his own agency with Jerry Parks, the Kiger-Parks Insurance Group in 1984. He continued with Kiger Insurance until his death. Over the years, he insured Kentucky Derby, Oaks and Breeders Cup winners and two Triple Crown winners – Seattle Slew and Affirmed. His clientele included many well-known actors and sports figures.
