below that is texas. this entire line waves, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven. eight super cells are all rotated, and eight super cells could have eight tornadoes on the ground at any one time. i know of three right now. there may be others that are just forming and others that are just lifting, but a dangerous night. if i take you over there, that s joplin, missouri. it s just a couple hours away. it s possible this severe weather is moving towards joplin right now? in a few hours. it would take three to four hours to get there. it would have to turn up the turnpike to tulsa and then even farther up i-44 to joplin, missouri. another ten miles to joplin as you get past the oklahoma state line. these people are used to tornadoes, but not necessarily these severe tornadoes. you could be used to an f-1, 100-mile-per-hour storm, and it s going to take your roof
relations. are the tensions of recent days any worse? any better? i m wolf blitzer and you re in the situation room. first, breaking news this hour. a large tornado has been spotted on the ground in oklahoma and storm-ravaged missouri is being hit by severe weather and possible in the coming hours, searchers in joplin have been taking advantage of the break in the bad weather for a few hours now. 17 people have been pulled alive from the rubble as of last night. but the death toll is far greater. up to 118 right now and that makes this the deadliest single tornado on record in the united states since the weather service began keeping records 60 years ago. almost 500 people have been killed by tornadoes in this country so far this year, including one in that storm and a security camera gives another look at the power of the twisters and how much damage they can do literally in an instant. now more on the twister reported on the ground in oklahoma just minutes ago. the danger
pictures are incredible. and if you go up the cliff, how the homes are perched on the edge now. and you can imagine how a little bit of rain could cause a lot more problems. so we do have a forecast with a chance of showers in it for tuesday. after that, should be sunny. windy on wednesday, and then clearing out and quiet again by thursday. all right. to the u.s., we have big spring storms already developing. it s a little early in the season for it, but it s already tornado time. take a look at some video from sunday afternoon. this is in kansas, right actually along the kansas and oklahoma state line where a supercell developed. and then we had some tornadoes that touched down. there are actually people who go out this time of year and they go out to follow these storms and get this kind of video and pictures. so they did see it, there were some tornado touchdowns, but this is mainly over open territory, farmland, so no reports of injuries, thankfully. more to come, perhaps. here s t
patti ann: the national weather service issuing a number of tornado warnings in several states. at least three people are dead after one twister ripped through cincinnati, arkansas, near the oklahoma border. fox meteorologist janice dean is in the extreme weather center with more. reporter: yeah, patti ann. just now st. louis, st. louis, missouri, under a tornado warning meaning that we are seeing doppler radar indicating strong rotation. there s the arch in be st. louis. so, st. louis, you are under a tornado warning for the next several minutes. okay. we were talking about that little town in arkansas. i want to go to pictures now because we have at least three confirmed dead. many injuries, extensive damage. this is, this city or, rather, this town located near the oklahoma state line, 20 miles west of fayetteville.
apparently, it s about 20 miles close to the oklahoma state line there, and the system caused damage in many several towns, shut down the airport in fayetteville. emergency responders having trouble reaching the damaged areas and some of the injured people because of downed power lines. but very unusual at the end of the year in this late december for a tornado to hit what is essentially, well, the adjacent corners of tornado alley. but, indeed, it surely has with deadly result. three people have lost their lives. others have been injured in the tiny arkansas town of cincinnati. we ll continue to follow what s happening there, jamie? jamie: gregg, thanks. afghanistan getting some help securing its border. u.s. homeland security secretary janet napolitano in kabul today along with some american border agents she brought over. what sort of impact could that have? gregg: and it s the happiest moment in some families lives.
