relations. are the tensions of recent days any worse? any better? i'm wolf blitzer and you're in "the situation room." first, breaking news this hour. a large tornado has been spotted on the ground in oklahoma and storm-ravaged missouri is being hit by severe weather and possible in the coming hours, searchers in joplin have been taking advantage of the break in the bad weather for a few hours now. 17 people have been pulled alive from the rubble as of last night. but the death toll is far greater. up to 118 right now and that makes this the deadliest single tornado on record in the united states since the weather service began keeping records 60 years ago. almost 500 people have been killed by tornadoes in this country so far this year, including one in that storm and a security camera gives another look at the power of the twisters and how much damage they can do literally in an instant. now more on the twister reported on the ground in oklahoma just minutes ago. the danger potentially with joplin, missouri as well. let's bring in chad myers who is monitoring -- it's the last thing that these folks needed. >> exactly. it's just west of he will reno, this tornado that we're talking about on i-40, crossing i-40. so people are in their cars driving into a cell, into a storm, not even realizing that they are driving into a tornado. there will be cars off the road and cars blown away. there will be tractor-trailers blown over. this cell right now is heading to another town in oklahoma, in the next ten minutes they are in danger of being hit by another tornado, two or three on a scale of ef storms. it's half a mile wide moving across the interstate. there's oklahoma city. so west of there. moving into calumet. we have our eyes on it. we have our men up there driving up and down looking for the cells and helicopter shots from koco. the problem with the cells today, and i think this will be the problem for many of the hours that we see this, is that they are called wrapped in rain. there is so much rain wrapped around the tornado that you can't literally see it. even if you're being looking outside and say there is nothing coming my way except rain, it just looks like rain but it's not. this is the only second tornado of the day and there may be many more. there may be 20 to 50 tornadoes. this is a high risk day and even high risk and good possibilities for joplin, missouri. it will take a while. joplin is way up there. but there will be many tornadoes on the ground. have that noaa radio on today. >> as you pointed out to our viewers, this year tornadoes seem to be so much more powerful than over recent years. >> yes. many times we get storms that line up and they are called squall line storms. they are all in a line and they all fight for the energy. they all fight for the moisture. the storms today are not in the line. there is one there and there's one there and another here and another here. as they are separated from the other cells they are called super cell tornadoes. or super cell thunderstorms. they rotate because they are not being affected by all of the other storms around them. they are their individual sell if and roll through with big tornadoes and that's what we've seen three or four times, three or four events this year where major tornadoes, 200 miles per hour and at some points even greater than that have rolled through big towns. joplin officially was only rated 198. i don't know who is splitting hairs between 198 and 200 miles per hour, wolf. >> i don't think anyone can tell the difference. let us know what the latest is. chad myers, thank you. let's go to the disaster and the rescue operation. >> reporter: they are on the ground working 24/7 and going to the damaged areas. they are working on a grid system. that's what they started working at. going by foot, neighborhood by neighborhood, block by block. the weather may complicate things later on today. you heard chad talking about the tornado watch in this general area in the country but we may get thunderstorms later tonight, which could complicate the rescue efforts. getting more information about the death toll of the 118 people right now reported killed. 11 died in one place, the greenbriar nursing home. two people from that nursing home remain in critical condition. now, we talked about the injured, the dead, about several hundred people were injured but about 1500 people remain unaccounted for. that's what the rescuers are searching for. however, one city official said as they open up some of these areas and people start trickling back to their homes or what is left, that number of people should dwindle. the city manager spoke more at length about the rescue efforts. >> we are still in search and rescue mode and will be for the foreseeable future. we are working on that and have had a wonderful outpouring of support from volunteers coming into our community to affect that search and rescue and we are involved in that and hopefully we'll get a little cooperation so far today with the weather and in order to do that as efficiently as possible. >> one official said that by late tonight, by the time the sun goes down tonight, they hope to be finished with their primary and secondary rescue efforts. we'll show you what they have to deal with. look at this area in here. landscape tells you everything. they have to go through collapsed buildings, roofs that were caved in and they are going to have to find any kind of void or pocket where someone might have a breath of life left. it's a pain staking process and takes a long time. they are not ready to give up on any of this yet. with the landscape the way it is, the nature of the buildings, the flattened boards and brick and mortar, it's hard to walk. now they have the weather to worry about later on tonight. that's something that we'll keep tabs on, wolf. >> i'm confused about why they think that the 1500 number, those people still missing listed officially as missing, why that would dwindle as folks get back to see their homes. >> reporter: well, they say that a lot of people have left town or have not been able to be in touch with their loved ones as they search for a place to say. cell phone service is almost nonexistent in most of this area. e-mail, blackberry service also very, very spotty. so traditional and more modern methods of communication is not available to people. when they leave town or try to go to some place relatively close to here to find shelter, they are having a difficult time communicating with their loved ones. when people trickle back and circulate back to this area, maybe that number will dwindle. >> let's hope it does. dwindle is good. brian, thank you. president obama will get a firsthand look at the tornado damage in joplin. he's scheduled to visit the disaster zone this coming sunday. the president took time out from his official meeting in england to talk about the storm devastation back home. >> i want everybody in joplin and minnesota across the midwest to know that we are here for you. the american people are by your side we're going to stay there until every home is repaired, until every neighborhood is rebuilt, until every business is back on its feet that's my commitment and that's the american people's kmimts. >> people in joplin and across the country are turning to social media to try to get information about missing loved ones. a 1 1/2-year-old named skyular got lost in the chaos after the tornado hit on sunday. we'll have more ahead. we'll talk to a woman who is desperately searching for her 16-year-old son. when the tornado came barrelling through joplin, people sought cover anywhere that they could, including a refrigerator inside of a local pancake house. casey is joining us from joplin with more on this part of the story. amazing stories of survival, casey. >> reporter: it really is. we met a man who will not admit to being a hero but he helped rescue three dozen people eating and working in an i-hop when the tornado hit. >> people cleared debris around. >> reporter: danny is the manager of this demolished i hop restaurant. he was on duty when the tornado struck on sunday. >> started getting dark and it was hailing and the siren went off and we sensed it was a tornado watch. we're used to this kind of stuff so tp wasn't scared at the beginning but after that it kept getting worse and worse. >> reporter: inside, 30 customers and six employees. >> debris started hitting the windows and stuff and you could hear the noises before the window breaks. everybody got stared and stuff. we thought the best place to go was to the back and hide. everybody went through this way inside to the back, just away from the window, away from any glasses or so nobody would get hurt. >> reporter: what were you hearing? >> a lot of noise like a train. a lot of noises. people gathered and there are too many so it was crowded. they managed to get inside the walk-in and inside the freezer. so as you see, it wouldn't fit many people. >> 15 people in the refrigerator, 15 in the freezer and the rest huddled outside. imagine one of the 15 people crammed inside this walk-in refrigerator waiting out the tornado. had to be even scarier because there was no light and they were in here for about five minutes hoping and praying. once the noise stopped, customers and employees got out and surveyed the damage. it had to be shocking to see near total devastation among plates of food along the table. >> thank god nobody got hurt and everybody was fine. >> reporter: his house was destroyed yet two days after the storm he has nothing but kind words for his adopted town. >> people come all together and make through it. i'm very proud of the joplin people. >> reporter: as for the future of the restaurant -- >> is it going to be rebuilt? >> definitely it's going to come back better than before. >> reporter: two of the people in that i hop eating dinner on sunday night were members of the missouri state legislature and very happy to be alive thanks to the restaurant manager, danny. >> a hero indeed. thank you for that. casey wian, we'll >> well, i don't think they really know. i know that talking to the fire chief today they found one other person alive earlier today as i was leaving one area they thought maybe they were hearing some noise from a walmart, a collapsed walmart building that might be somebody pounding on pipes there. i know that they were taking the last runs through that with dogs today to see if they could get a sense that there was anybody else there. i think they are very uncertain about numbers. a lot of people have probably gone to the family that lived close or somebody picked them up and they just don't know how many people they are looking for at this point and one of the efforts is try to begin to figure out who is still missing. there was a nursing home that was destroyed and not all of those people have been accounted for yet. they were taken out of the nursing home to try to get them out of the area was a challenge. i talked to one set of volunteers, wolf, that had a friend of there's had went to home depot with two young children. those three bodies were found yesterday and the mother who was going to home depot to maybe pick up a light bulb is now without the family that i'm sure she loved so much and there are lots of stories like that, a lot of people will be impacted by this devastating tornado. >> such heartbreaking stories indeed. $3 billion to reconstruct the devastation in joplin and the surrounding areas. the majority leader in the house says the federal government should provide assistance to the people in the government but wants there to be cuts in other federal spending in order to justify providing this financial assistance to the people in missouri. what do you think about that? whether cnn or our viewers, people who would like to help you find your 16-year-old son. >> the only thing i can say, since we don't know anything, just getting his name out there because somebody may have seen something else or they may have heard -- they may have seen him on the road, you know. at this point, just getting it out there, i think, helps. because the communication obviously around here has been so sketchy that half the times you can't even get through to any places, hospitals, get to the triages, get to things like that. i think, most of all, just getting it out there as much as we can, and i think that also gets people that we do know are involved to move a little faster, like the temporary morgue site instead of making us wait, maybe might say, you know, let's try to push this through or, once again the hospitals saying we thought you'd call us back, but now seeing this, we'll call you or anything like that. >> we know there are 1,500 people that are listed as missing right now although authorities say they're hoping that number will dwindle as folks can get back towards their homes and try to see what's going on, cell phone service obviously not very good. did he have a cell phone with him? >> right. yes, he did. after he was disconnected from me, i was never able to reach him again. however, he did get a phone call -- he was on the phone with another friend, we believe, when the tornado actually hit the car. the friend ryan says he could literally hear the swoosh came through and the phone went dead. i was not able to recontact him after the one phone call. of course, i called trb just repeatedly called and called and called. in between checking on my other son, who was at home at the house alone, fortunately no damage to my home. so my other son was fine and safe. but someone was on the phone with him, we believe, when the tornado struck the car. >> we're hoping for the best, michelle. lantz hare, we're hoping you find him and find him soon. can we stay in touch with you? >> it is. and oklahoma city proper, all the way from guthrie to edmund and down to norman kind of stretches out in a north-south fashion. not so much east and west, but north and south along i-35. and so as the tornado comes up he here, it's certain to hit on the ground. it's certain to hit some, either moore, norman, oklahoma city, or maybe even down towards midwest city and then across. this could be right into downtown for that matter. as it moves to the north and northeast right along the turner turnpike, right along the turnpike itself here. and there's another storm heading into guthrie. that's the big storm that i'm very worried about. is that the storm? is that truly? that is live. this is the chickasha storm? yes. this is now not the tornado we looked at ten minutes ago. this is now what we call a wedge, or maxi tornado. there will be more than one tornado almost inside of that tornado. we call it a multi-vortex tornado or something where suction spots are spinning within that. so that could be 150-mile-per-hour tornado right there. from that look, that would be an ef-3, maybe approaching an ef-4, but probably only a 3 as it moves on up. it is getting stronger and still heading into the oklahoma city metro area. i don't want to say the city yet. but anywhere from norman on the south side to the city on the north side. this is a major storm heading up the turnpike. you need to be taking cover now. it will be in oklahoma city probably give it 30 minutes or so. you have that much time to get everything prepared and get yourself in a closet. get yourself covered. go ahead and get your motorcycle helmet, football helmet, basketball, whatever, anything that could protect you from the outside elements if your house is swept away. the trauma of all those houses. we saw it, wolf. we saw house that's are just gone. if you're inside those houses, you may be protected a little bit if you have more padding around you. think about yourself as being an egg. you have to put padding around you. as these storms move these houses and knock these houses down. what a brutal day in oklahoma again. as we were talking about, this is still miles away, but maybe four hours away, joplin, missouri, is up there, and we know how devastated that city already is with pieces of the town really strewn all over. 50, 60-mile-per-hour wind will take those pieces and throw them again, making even more danger. >> i could just report now the canadian county sheriff in oklahoma, randall edwards, says there are confirmed fatalities, destroyed homes and damage at the gas plant in ellarino, highway 66 and court road. are you familiar with this area? >> ellrino was the town as the tornado moved just a mile north of ellrino. keep going. oklahoma city, i-40, ellrino is right there. it moved from hinton across i-40 and made a run at piedmont. now it's continuing here. this is the word cashen. that's where the other damage is right there. and it is still on the ground moving up toward guthrie, another very populated area. although literally, obviously, the bulk of the population is here, but the population does spread out north and south from oklahoma city. >> i'm very worried about what's going on in oklahoma. stand by for a moment. anderson cooper is on the ground for us as well. anderson, you see the breaking news out of oklahoma city, oklahoma, they're bracing for more tornadoes right now. what's it like where you are? >> obviously, people here are bracing for a storm. we're waiting to see what weather we're going to get tonight. that's been the concern all day long as rescue operations going on. they were severely hampered by the driving rain and lightning storms. a number of times rescue crews had to be called off the search and basically keep safety. they're hoping that doesn't happen tonight. they're hoping to find some survivors underneath the wreckage. i was at the home depot today. they recovered one more person at the home depot. they recovered seven. one person was alive but seven fatalities. they found one fatality today. it is very difficult work. they're trying to get through this mass of concrete and steel. they've got canine dogs and heavy equipment. it is very slow going, and the weather is a real concern. >> anderson, brian todd, who was in japan when you were in japan in the after math of the earthquake and tsunami, it's eerily similar to some of the scenes in japan that he's seen in joplin, missouri. >> i think with the rescue personnel they weren't as well equipped as we've seen here. we've seen crews from all around the country. i was working with a task force from missouri today. they're totally self-sufficient. they've got generators and heavy earth-moving equipment. there's a lot of bulldozers already you see going through some of the heavier wreckage. in japan, you really didn't see that for many days, if not weeks. you saw large numbers of japanese military poking around with sticks. and there the debris was so thick in japan, it was often 15, 20 feet because of the tsunami. here you have people's possessions, which are strewn all about, but kind of the residue of buildings is generally in a kind of location, where the tsunami would carry things for miles, and you really had no idea where something might have gone. >> do they really believe a lot of those 1,500 people still listed as missing are going to be found okay? that's what authorities are saying, but i'm worried. >> there's a lot of understandable lack of organization at this point. communication is very difficult. cell phone service is spotty. so i think a lot of people haven't been able to connect with each other. we've seen it at the library, people trying to use computers to connect with loved ones. it's hard to find internet access here. we have to be careful with that 1,500 figure. yes, those people are unaccounted for. it's very hard. we're very early days, and it's hard to figure out exactly who was supposed to be here and where somebody might have ended up. it's certainly an ominous number and a number we have to watch very closely. there's still hope a significant number of those people may simply just not have connected with their loved ones yet. >> what's encouraging, as you point out, anderson, rescue workers are pouring into the area from all over the country right now. do you get a sense they have the equipment, the wherewithal they need to get the job done? >> we've been driving around all day and seen a number of rescue personnel in neighborhoods. they do seem organized. we've seen a number of dogs -- not cadaver dogs, i should point out, but dogs specially trained to find living human beings at this point. lots of the urban search and rescue teams, they have a three or four-day window they used to operate in that they're totally self-sufficient for. they're moving as fast as they can to make the most of this window that they have. >> and right now in oklahoma, as you've been hearing us report the breaking news. moving more and more closer. as big as oklahoma city is, the greater moat roer metropolitan joplin is about 400,000, but oklahoma city is much bigger. it's a real source of worry. we're showing our viewers this live picture of this monster tornado. you can see how wide it is as it moves closer. it's near chickasha right now in oklahoma city. that's a suburb of oklahoma city, not far from oklahoma city. we're watching this very, very closely. i don't know what's going on in the world, anderson, right now, but there seems to be disaster after disaster after disaster, and you've been on the scene for, i would say, all of them. >> it's hard to see that another place is suffering and there's been confirmed fatalities already. it's the worst possible news. again, it's not just the size or the speed of the wind here that we have to look at. it's the speed at which the twister is actually moving. that was one of the problems here, i think, in joplin, people were saying this was a slow-moving twister around the hospital. it kind of lingered around the hospital for about a minute or so. the longer this storm stays in an area, stays over a city, obviously, the worse it is. that's something obviously also we'll be tracking with oklahoma city. >> you'll be interested to know, our viewers will be interested to know yesterday we'll be reporting the tornado in joplin was an f-4. now authorities have officially said it's an f-5, with winds more than 200 miles an hour. anderson, we're going to be watching "ac 360" later tonight. thanks for your excellent reporting. lots going on right now. we're going to continue breaking coverage. tornadoes getting ominously close to oklahoma city. chad myers will explain what's going on. we'll check in with our affiliates on the ground. you saw these devastated pictures. much more of our breaking news coverage right after this.
