Share COLUMBUS, Ohio-No. 4 Ohio State (18-7, 12-7) struggled early, battled back but could not overcome No. 9 Iowa (18-7, 12-6) in a 73-57 loss to the Hawkeyes Sunday at Value City Arena. The Buckeyes jumped out of the second-half gates with a 14-2 run to cut a 42-28 lead for Iowa at the half to 44-42 in favor of the Hawkeyes with 16:49 on the clock. Iowa then built the lead back to 10 at 61-51 (8:38) and the Buckeyes were not able to get it into single digits the rest of the way. Ohio State was led by sophomore E.J. Liddell’s 15 points. Junior Justice Sueing added 12 ahead of 10 from senior CJ Walker.

Lonsway, Smith and Pohl Named Captains for the 2021 Season

Share COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State baseball head coach Greg Beals announced that this year’s team will be led by a trio of captains – Griffan Smith, Seth Lonsway. “It is an honor to be named captain of the Buckeyes and I am extremely happy for Seth, Conner and Griffan,” said Beals. “They are very well deserving captains who have earned the votes from their teammates. These three guys have been around the block a few times, they have seen tough times as well as championships and national tournaments. The leadership in our program is strong, it starts with our captains but runs deep throughout the clubhouse.”

Ohio State, Minnesota Split Saturday Doubleheader

Share LEESBURG, Fla. – Ohio State and No. 22 Minnesota played 18 innings of softball on Saturday over the course of six hours and when it ended, the Buckeyes and Gophers had split a doubleheader in Leesburg, Fla. Ohio State is 2-2 on the year and closes out in opening-weekend with two games tomorrow vs. Nebraska (3:30 p.m. and 6:15 p.m.). The first game of the day featured an 11-inning marathon that resulted in a 2-1 Ohio State win. Senior Payton Buresch went 10.1 innings without giving up an earned run and Kaitlyn Coffman plated what proved to be the winning run on a RBI double in the top of the 11th. Freshman Allison Smith closed out the game with the first save of her young career.
