People resort to panic buying before lockdown starts, at Unit-1 market on Monday
BHUBANESWAR/SAMBALPUR: It was a mad rush of people in the markets of twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack and western Odisha’s biggest town Sambalpur on Monday as people scrambled to buy essentials and much more ahead of the 14-day lockdown starting Wednesday, which aims to break the chain of transmission.
Markets, especially vegetables, grocery, chicken and meat shops witnessed unprecedented crowd, throwing caution to the wind. By the looks of it one felt these shops won’t open again or they may not get a chance to buy at all. The shopowners were also busy in transactions, forgetting the need to maintain Covid protocol. This despite the fact that shopowners had been categorically told that they could be penalised if norms were violated.

Covid-19 surge: Odisha govt declares 14-day lockdown from May 5
The Odisha government on Sunday declared a 14-day lockdown from May 5 to contain the rapid spread of COVID-19 in the state, an official order said.
In a video message, Chief Secretary SC Mahapatra said the lockdown will be imposed in the entire state from May 5 (5 am) till May 19.
Along with the lockdown, the weekend shutdown in urban areas will also be in force till May 15, he said.

Amid the rising coronavirus COVID-19 cases in Odisha, the state government on Sunday (May 2) announced to impose a 14-day complete lockdown in Odisha from May 5. The total lockdown in Odisha will be in place till May 19 and the lockdown will remain in place in all 30 districts.
The order issued by the state government on Sunday said that strict restrictions will be enforced prohibiting the movement of public and vehicles. However, residents will be allowed to purchase essential items from nearby their houses by walking to only 500 metre distance between 6 AM and 12 PM.
