Come to order. I want to thank the witnesses for being here today. And we look forward to a fulsome hearing. I want to thank those, also in attendance. I know there was a little bit of an outbreak prior to us convene convening. We thank you for being here. We do hope youll respect that now the meetings in order. Outbursts of any kind are unwarranted and will respect the democratic process that is taking place here. So, again, we thank you for beg being here. We also thank you for your courtesy as we move ahead. I know the witnesses have agreed to be here as long as we wish. So well start with sevenminute questions. I do know based on last nights presentation, theres sometimes a tendency for witnesses to want to interject. And what i would say is, obviously we conduct our meetings with a lot of respect and courtesy. And i would just ask the witnesses if they would to respond directly to the question from senators on both sides of the aisle as if they ask when you ask it directly to a wi
4 white house cabinet members and chairs of the joint chiefs of staff testified about the Iran Nuclear Agreement at a hearing of the Senate Armed Services committee. This hearing focused on the military perspective on the deal, with much of the testimony coming from defense secretary Ashton Carter and general martin dempsey. Senator john mccain chairs this threehour meeting. Sen. Mccain good morning. The Committee Meets today on the joint country has a plan of action, which the u. S. And other major powers have signed with iran. We welcome our distinguished witnesses and thank them for joining us today. Andppreciate the senators secretary moniz and lew being here. For the record, i did not request the presence of it secretary kerry or moniz or secretary lew. Im glad they are here, as their desire to do so. Since this focus is todays hearing, its on a strategic and military implications of the iran agreement. What we want to know, among other things, is how this agreement will affect Re
You plan to get us off the bottom . Mr. Hefenger i start with the fact that everyone rose raise their hand and took an oath of office. How many people in this country do that . Im sure their eyes were open. They knew it was not the most popular job in the country. But they said i want to be the face of security for the traveling public. That is where morale starts. What is where does morale fail after that . I go right back to the mission and my dedication to the coast guard told me it starts with the mission. And then you have to talk about that mission. And you have to train to that mission. And you have to measure that mission area. When i come to work, i know i want to know that i am being given the tools and the training to do it and they are backing me up when i have to make decisions. I think there is a lot of training to that and there is a Workforce Engagement needs. Representative thompson people who apply do not have to go back. Now we are hearing, when they tried to get rec
Produce oil in iran, so they invested that billion dollars, so they are performing under that contract, they are producing x barrels a day, and they did that after the sanctions were lifted, could they continue under that contract or not . Mr. Nephew my understanding is no. At the moment the snapback is triggered the b. P. Staff and whatever financing is still going on or Technical Assistance going on has to be stopped. The United States government will now not sanction them for having built the plant in the first place. Senator corker you agree with that . Chairman zarate im not sure. Its a question how it gets interpreted. This can be affected by the nature of the snapback if there is a tailored snapback, this could be impacted by the nature of the contract itself. There could be special purpose vehicles created to contend with this provision to ensure the continuity of the actions. I think you could have parties at the u. N. , permanent five, arguing that as long as the continued ac
We have had a nice long perio d without having these brinkmanship moments. I have been studies that show a really does have an economic impact. It is really not good for the economy for there to be this uncertainty, and for congress to keep going to the 11th hour on these things. It seems like on with a set itself up to have Something Like that. Worst case is if you do have another crisis where the government shuts down, they dont raise the debt ceiling really uncertain. Susan f. there will be a stopgap measure to get us through. A waiver that things could get in the way such as conservatives saying we are not backing anything like planned parenthood. I think that is the strategy we are looking at now to avoid, as you say, the brinkmanship that scares the market. Susan s. senator shelby himself noted that with the number of gop wannabes in the senate, it is a different ball game. Victoria absolutely. Susan s. thanks for being with us this week. Susan f. thank you. Booktv is television
