NORTHAMPTON A local activist group will hold a memorial Tuesday in front of City Hall for George Floyd and others who have lost their lives due to police. Tuesday is the one-year anniversary of Floyd’s death.
The standout, from 4 to 5 p.m., is being organized by Northampton Abolition Now. The group is seeking the creation of a Department of Community Care to take over a number of functions currently handled by police, such as mental health checks, and to cut funding for the police department by 50 percent. The one-year anniversary of the murder of George Floyd by a former Minneapolis police officer will be marked today with an event in Northampton.
The local activist group Northampton Abolition Now is hosting a standout from 4pm-5pm in front of Northampton City Hall.
It will feature speeches and conclude with nine minutes and 29 seconds of silence – the amount of time that former police officer Derek Chauvin kneeled on Floyd’s neck.
