Nomsa Mazwai embarks on a fight for sex workers’ rights Share Singer and social activist Nomsa Mazwai has joined forces with organisations Sweat and Sisonke to help decriminalise sex work in South Africa. Mazwai recently founded a non-profit organisation called #FunkItImWalking, whose aim to creates a safe space for women, children and families in their communities. Commenting on the partnership, Mazwai said: “#FunkItImWalking aims to make it safe for a woman to walk at any time of day in any condition. Injury to one is an injury to all. “If sex workers aren’t safe, none of us is safe. Sex workers are especially vulnerable because when they are victims of illegal acts of violence, they can’t seek assistance or protection from law enforcement.

According to Nomsa the walk, which is called #FunkItImWalking, will highlight challenges faced by sex workers to improve their quality of life, to ensure a safe working environment, address the risks of human trafficking, and the need for sex workers to have access to the justice system to address violence and abuse from clients, the police, intimate partners as well as brothel owners.

Nomsa Mazwai s stint as Soweto Theatre manager ends 03 May 2021 - 14:17 Writer, poet and musician Nomsa Mazwai has announced her departure from Soweto Theatre after five years working as a general manager. Mazwai, whose last day of her five-year contract was on Friday, says she is looking forward to focusing her energy in building her own initiative called #FunkItImWalking which aims to make it safe for women to walk at any time of day. She walks away from Soweto Theatre with a sense of pride having doubled attendance numbers to the theatre with her team. She managed the facility, leading a team of over 30 people while also making a contribution towards the programming of the theatre.

During those five years she contributed to the profile of the arts institution. Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, Mazwai and her team had doubled attendance numbers to the theatre. This is no small feat, especially in the arts industry, where attracting audiences to theatre spaces is a huge challenge. When asked how this was accomplished, Mazwai responded: Partnerships with Soweto producers, existing client retention and collaborative marketing and promotion activities.
