A UK court on Thursday ordered the extradition of diamond merchant Nirav Modi to India to stand trial in the estimated USD 2-billion Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam case. After a nearly two-year-long legal battle, the court ruled that a prima facie case has been established against Modi as it dismissed the diamantaire s mental health concerns stating they are not unusual in a man in his circumstances .
The 49-year-old appeared via videolink from Wandsworth Prison in south-west London and showed no emotion as District Judge Samuel Goozee handed down his judgment at Westminster Magistratesâ Court in London.

New Delhi: In a major setback to fugitive diamond merchant Nirav Modi, a UK court on Thursday ordered his extradition in connection with the Rs 13,500 crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) loan fraud case, after almost a two-year long legal battle.
The District Judge at the Westminster Magistrates Court, Samuel Goozee, accepted the prima facie evidence against Modi for money laundering, saying: Many of these are a matter for trial in India. I am satisfied again that there is evidence that he could be convicted, according to reports.

Nirav Modi extradition: UK Court to deliver judgment on Feb 25
The Westminster Magistrates Court in London will pronounce its judgment on whether fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi will be extradited to India in connection with the Rs 13,000 crore bank fraud case. The UK court completed the hearing regarding Nirav Modi s extradition on January 8 and set February 25 as the date for the delivery of its judgement.

Apart from charges relating to defrauding PNB, Modi also faces charges of money laundering, destruction of evidence and witness intimidation.

The verdict of the extradition case of fugitive diamond dealer Nirav Modi will be handed down by the UK judge next month after the Indian government and Modi s defence lawyers made their final submissions at Westminster Magistrate s Court in London on Friday.
Judge Samuel Goozee will deliver his judgment on February 25, just under two years after Nirav Modi was arrested in London on multiple charges including defrauding the state-owned Punjab National Bank (PNB) of more than USD 2 billion.
