Prime Minister António Costa has announced new tougher lockdown measures for the country following the consistent rise in the number of cases in the country.
In his speech to the nation Costa stated that it is “unacceptable to maintain the levels of circulation within the public as was seen over the weekend”. He highlighted data from public transport and mobile networks which showed that over the past weekend there was only a reduction of around 30% in the circulation of people in Portugal.
He reiterated that what is important is not what prohibitions are being put in place but instead the importance of everyone protecting themselves, others and the National health Service (SNS) at this time.

Sixty homeless people from the city of Porto are going to be socially and professionally re-included under the Porto Sentido project, which started last year. Seven are already in the labour market.

On 13 January, electricity consumption beat the daily record of 11 years and natural gas consumption exceeded the maximum of 2017, according to data from REN - National Energy Networks.
The cold snap is the reason for the increase in energy consumption says the manager of the energy networks in Portugal.
The maximum daily electricity consumption reached 185.1 GWh on Wednesday (13 January), surpassing the peak recorded on 11 January 2010.
The highest peak in electricity consumption was at 7:30pm on the 12th, and was 9,887 MW, surpassing the record of 9,403 MW recorded in 2010.

Portugal today has registered a total of 159 deaths, a new maximum of deaths related to covid-19 in 24 hours, and 10,663 new cases of infection with the new coronavirus, according to the Directorate-General for Health (DGS).
The DGS epidemiological bulletin also indicates that 4,560 people are hospitalised, 192 more than on Thursday, of which 622 are in intensive care, that is, 11 more, in both cases, also new highs.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, in March 2020, Portugal has recorded 8,643 deaths associated with covid-19 and 528,469 infections by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, with 125,861 cases now active, 4,046 more than on Thursday.
