Today Portugal has registered two more deaths related to covid-19 and 271 new cases of infection with the new coronavirus, according to the bulletin of the Directorate-General for Health (DGS).
According to the epidemiological bulletin, released today by the DGS, 479 patients are hospitalised in wards, 13 more than on Sunday, and 119 in intensive care, six more.
The data also reveals that 445 people were reported to have recovered, bringing the total number to 785,063 since the beginning of the pandemic in Portugal, in March 2020.
Active cases in Portugal continue to record a decrease, with 25,783 registered today (minus 176).
António Almeida Henriques, Mayor of Viseu, has passed away
The Mayor of Viseu, António Almeida Henriques, died today at the age of 59, victim of respiratory complications resulting from Covid-19, the municipality announced.
“The Municipality of Viseu informs, with great regret, that the Mayor, António Almeida Henriques, died this morning at the São Teotónio Hospital, victim of respiratory complications resulting from the Covid-19”, reads a press release from the Chamber, sent to the Lusa agency.
The social-democratic mayor took the Covid-19 test on March 4 and, despite the positive result, he felt good and “only with mild symptoms”, having continued to work from home.
About 150,000 more teachers and staff tested this week
About 150,000 teachers and other school staff will be tested between Monday and Friday, to detect the SARS-Cov-2 virus, which causes Covid-19, the Ministry of Education announced today.
“The testing process in the public and private sector of education and teaching establishments continues from Monday, coinciding with the beginning of the 3rd term and the resumption of classroom activities for the 2nd and 3rd cycles of basic education. Approximately 150 thousand teaching and non-teaching workers will be tested between the 5th and the 9th of April”, reads a statement.
According to ministerial officials, this is the second phase of the “National Testing Strategy” for SARS-CoV-2 and, “as usual, this information has already been sent to schools”.

The transmissibility index (Rt) of the new coronavirus in Portugal has risen today to 1 on the continent, while the incidence has dropped to 60.9 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants in the last 14 days, according to official data.
The previous Rt on the continent, released on Friday, was 0.97 and the incidence was 62.9 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
Regarding the values referring to the whole country, the joint bulletin from the Directorate-General for Health (DGS) and the National Institute of Health Doutor Ricardo Jorge (INSA) reveals an increase of Rt of 0.97, on Friday, to 0.98. R
