Portland winter theater, film guide: Organizers adapt to bring arts into homes
Updated Jan 12, 2021;
The winter season traditionally offers a full plate of theater, dance and other arts events. But with COVID-19 restrictions still firmly in place, companies have had to pivot to offer theater and film audiences new avenues to enjoy performances.
While some organizations are still finalizing plans and methods of delivery, the theater groups below have already rehearsed and recorded performances to stream on various platforms. Also this winter, two well-known film festivals are ready to stream movies, or provide drive-in screenings.
Mark your calendars for these winter events:

Disney’s Bedknobs And Broomsticks
The show will be at the Congress Theatre, Eastbourne from October 13-17 2021 and at the Mayflower Theatre, Southampton from January 11-16 2022. Tickets are on sale now from Eastbourne and in Southampton from Monday, December 14.
With the original songs by the Sherman Brothers (Mary Poppins, The Jungle Book, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang), including Portobello Road, The Age Of Not Believing, The Beautiful Briny and new music and lyrics by Neil Bartram and book by Brian Hill, Bedknobs and Broomsticks will be brought to life by award-winning theatre-makers Candice Edmunds and Jamie Harrison.
When the three orphaned Rawlins children are reluctantly evacuated from London to live with the mysterious Eglantine Price, they have no idea what adventures lie ahead. Upon discovering Eglantine to be a trainee witch, they join forces to search for a secret spell that will defeat the enemy once and for all.
Theatrical sorcery will be front and centre in the new stage version of the beloved Disney film Bedknobs And Broomsticks.
The 1971 movie musical starred Angela Lansbury as Miss Eglantine Price, an apprentice witch trying to conjure up duff spells, sold to her by fake magician Professor Emelius Browne (David Tomlinson), to stop the enemy from invading wartime Britain.
Her magical war efforts are taking place as her own life is being invaded: by three children, evacuated from London and sent to live with her in the quaint coastal village of Pepperinge Eye.
I saw the film as a kid and was amused, years later, to learn that, like Mary Poppins, it was all filmed on Hollywood sound stages!
