NEGAUNEE The Teal Lake Melt-Down fundraiser officially came to an end on Monday, April 5, at 3:18 p.m. when the headframe submerged through the ice. The headframe was placed on the ice of Teal Lake in mid-January, and until April 1 the community purchased $5 tickets for a guess as to when it would submerge. Mike Guenette guessed the headframe would go out of sight on April 5 at 3:01 p.m., making him the closest guess and the lucky winner of $2,188. A check presentation was held with Negaunee Lions Club members Neil Lynch, Mike Smock and Dave Hallgren presenting the check to Mike Guenette. Also in attendance was Bob Hendrickson, executive director of the GINCC, to congratulate Guenette on his win. Hallgren was the seller of this year’s winning ticket.

Teal Lake Meltdown Competition has Begun

ABC 10/CW5 NEGAUNEE When locals head past Teal Lake, they’ll see a head frame resting on the ice. The GINCC and the Negaunee Lions Club set it up over the weekend, to start their annual Teal Lake Meltdown contest. Last year, over 700 guesses were made to predict when the structure would finally fall through the lake. It costs $5 to make a guess, and the ticket with the closest time and date is the winner. The winner receives half the money raised, while the other half goes to the Negaunee Lions Club. To make a guess about when the structure will fall through, click here.

When will ice crack on lake? | News, Sports, Jobs

The Associated Press NEGAUNEE (AP) The Negaunee Lions Club and the Greater Ishpeming-Negaunee Area Chamber of Commerce are selling chances to guess when replica mining equipment will fall through the ice at Teal Lake as the lake’s cover melts. The cost is $5 for each entry in the annual fundraiser. Participants guess the date and time when the equipment hits the water. The winner gets 50% of the net proceeds or at least $500, whichever is greater. This year’s winner received $1,579 when the ice broke May 3. In 2019, the winner guessed April 26. The winning entry must be purchased at least 48 hours prior to the structure falling through the ice.
