Iran has announced plans to begin manufacturing uranium metal, amid heightened tensions with the US. It comes as Iran fired cruise missiles as part of a naval drill in the Gulf of Oman today.
The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) has issued a letter to be presented to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) about Tehran's intention to resume the production of 20 percent enriched uranium, the head of AEOI said on Friday evening.

TEHRAN The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) has issued a letter to be presented to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) about Tehran s intention to resume the production of 20 percent enriched uranium, the head of AEOI said on Friday evening. As required by the parliament, we are going to start the 20 percent (enrichment of uranium), Ali Akbar Salehi said in an interview on Iran s state TV.
On the order of Iran s President Hassan Rouhani, a formal announcement letter has been sent to Iran s representative office in Vienna, Austria, to be delivered to the IAEA, informing about Tehran s decision to produce 20 percent enriched uranium, Salehi said.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas on Monday urged Iran not to waste the opportunity offered by the prospect of Joe Biden’s United States administration returning to the nuclear non-proliferation deal.
Speaking after a video conference of officials from the countries in the JCPOA deal, Maas said that Iran should avoid taking any tactical steps that would make it hard for Biden to reverse President Donald Trump’s decision to quit the deal.
“To make possible a rapprochement with the US under Biden, there should be no further tactical maneuvers of the kind we’ve seen too many of in the recent past,” he told reporters. “This chance, this last window of opportunity, must not be wasted.”
