Career. Ladies and gentlemen, please join me in giving a warm boston welcome to senator john mccain. [applause] senator mccain thank you, ted. Mr. Vice president , all of ted friends and colleagues visible here today, it is a privilege to be here to help dedicate his institute. A fitting memorial for a man who gave a halfcentury of Dedication Service to our country in a place he truly loved, the United States that. I wish i hadnt already told my best anecdotal ted at his memorial service. It might have been appropriate here. It concerned an exchange that he and i had on the senate floor that was known for its bigger. Its volume and vigor. A story that we both enjoyed telling. Since many of you were present the last time, i wont repeat it today pity though, its a good one. [laughter] we were on the floor. [laughter] we went to freshman senators one democrat and one republican, who got into a parliamentary dispute. I sighed taking place, so i went down and actually took the side of the f
One made the senate, live like ted kennedy. It was one of the great pleasures of my life to hear ted kennedy deliver one of his stemwinders on the floor. Rarely was the more animated than when he went leading the Living Museum that were his offices. He could, and he would tell you everything that there was to know about all of it. [laughter] and then there were more somber moments. I still remember the first time i pulled open the drawer of my guess. Each senator is assigned a desk, and there is a tradition of carving the names of those who had used it before, and those names in my death included taft and baker simon gallstone, and robert f kennedy. The senate was a place where you instinctively pulled yourself up a little bit straighter, where he tried to act a little bit better. Being a senator changes a person, ted wrote in his memoirs. As vicki said, it may take a year or two years or three years, it always happens. It fills you with a heightened sense of purpose. That is the magic
Gathered in this little room off the Senate Chamber, and he came bustling in and sat down with us. For the next 30 to 40 minutes, we all talked with him about health care while literally a dozen members of the u. S. Senate at one point or another poked their head in. And in those kinds of conversations you have with people that you really know, abbreviated little, did you look after yeah, i am on that and did you take, yeah, i got that. Back and forth, back and forth between him and his colleagues in the u. S. Senate. And when we left that day, i thought to myself, in a business where it is so much easier to stop something from happening than it is to actually find your way to get something done, this is how this guy succeeds. Relationships, trust followthrough. It was all on display that day as a sidebar to the meeting that we were having about health care. In short, senator kennedy absolutely was the bigfoot from massachusetts in so many ways if you needed somebody to help you get so
Otherwise, i dont feel that they really represent clinical approaches or ideas about illness that are grounded in science. Cspan well, you can see them on a regular basis on public television. First of all, what do you know about any of them . Guest i know that Christine Northrup did, in fact, have a pbs special and she wrote a book called womens bodiesmy gosh, im blanking on it, butand itshe had wide, wide viewership. And, in fact, all three of them, Deepak Chopra and i believe andrew weil as well have had specials on pbs. So thats a huge viewership. And their books are bestsellers. So clearly, they appeal to people. But some of the messages that they put out, i think are, as i said, not really grounded in experimental work. They talk about therapies that have not been proven. And Christine Northrup in particular is put forth as a Womens Health expert, and yet, some of the truisms that she was putting forth reminded me of sort of a bad parody of freud. What she said, for example, was
Use an independent National Antidoping agency for olympic, paralympic and American Sports in nine states. Ive often joked with him that hes been my secretary of state while ive served here in the United States senate because you could count on senator lugar to give good, unbiased advice on complicated Foreign Relations issues. And we will very much miss senator lugars voice here in the United States senate and also his better half, char lugar, who i think we all know is a bright light. So, senator lugar, it has been an honor and a privilege to serve with you, and i know that your voice will continue to be heard on the important issues of the day. So thank you for your service to our country and to your state, and thank you for being a good friend to me. Mr. President , we have this long tradition in the senate of s
