Prompt action from citizens and intervention by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) have temporarily halted the unauthorised construction, shedding light on the urgent need for a comprehensive survey of the lake’s boundaries.
Following directions from the Joint Director of Town Planning (JDTP) North at BBMP HO, officials from JDTP (Mahadevapura Zone) inspected the site at Haralur Lake a few days ago. They identified unauthorised construction without a sanctioned plan and promptly halted the ongoing work. Citizens observed numerous pillars erected near the lake and construction debris strewn around the area.
The situation at Gowdanapalya Lake has raised eyebrows, as it remains without any protective fencing, essentially extending an open invitation to potential violators. A new gate installed at Kothnur Lake lacks sufficient fencing, leaving the lake ecology exposed to potential harm. Chunchaghatta Lake, a rejuvenated lake, lacks adequate fencing, while Dorakere is said to have eight gateways to the lake. Konnanakunte Lake, rejuvenated in 2023, has a 100-meter boundary still with an old broken fence.
They cite the Karnataka High Court’s recent direction to the BBMP, apart from the State Urban Development and Revenue Departments, Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) and Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) to jointly come out with an action plan to remove all encroachments on storm water drains and lakes in Bengaluru city.
