Dusty narrow streets, roads further narrowed down by encroachments, no step taken for laying broader roads, improper drainage channels and free flow of drainage into channels carrying water for irrigation from the Tamirabharani continue to be eye sore of this town. While religion plays a major role in the voting pattern in elections in the Kanniyakumari district, the caste factor decides the winners in the districts of Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi. The constituency has 33,000 voters of Thevar community, followed by Pillai (32,000) and Yadhava (18,000).

Poondi S Venkatesan (Tiruvaiyaru)  The DMK MLA from Thirupparankundram constituency, P Saravanan who joined the BJP at 12 noon on Sunday has been given a party ticket to contest from Madurai North where he will take on DMK candidate G Thalapathi.  When asked how come the BJP offered a party ticket to Saravanan who joined the party just a few hours ago, a smiling Murugan said, “Indeed, Saravanan has joined the BJP online on Saturday itself.  On Sunday, he formally joined the party in Chennai. Besides, his popularity in the constituency, his services to the people were taken into consideration while giving him a party ticket.

Dhinakaran in Kovilpatti Assembly constituency, is confident of emerging victorious at the hustings. Mr. Raju, who arrived at Kovilpatti on Thursday, a day after being given the AIADMK ticket, said he did not see Mr. Dhinakaran as a major challenge to him. “The ‘Two Leaves’ symbol that gave a crowning victory in seven of the 10 Assembly polls in the past, will register victory again in Kovilpatti where I have implemented several development projects, including second drinking water scheme for Kovilpatti Municipality. The national party is keen on fielding its state vice-president and Tirunelveli Assembly constituency (in-charge) Nainar Nagenthran, a former AIADMK minister, who had contested from the constituency on four occasions on an AIADMK ticket and won in 2001 and 2011.
