KIMBERLY The Springville baseball team suffered its first loss of the season and went on to split a Saturday doubleheader in Kimberly.
The Tigers opened up the day with a 1-0 loss to host Mortimer Jordan and bounced back with a 8-0 win over West Point.

Blue Devil junior Austin Morris provided the game-winning RBI in the home-half of the sixth, lining a single into center field for the lone run of the game.
That was one of only three hits allowed by Springville starter Brady Gillespie in the loss. He surrendered no walks and struck out two in a complete six innings for the Tigers (6-1).

Eight local basketball teams have taken the floor in area championship games this week with two of them coming away on the winning side. See game-by-game recaps below.
GIRLS: No. 6 Mortimer Jordan 34, Clay-Chalkville 31
The Lady Cougars were unable to protect a fourth-quarter lead on Thursday night in the Class 6A, Area 12 tournament championship game. Clay-Chalkville (13-7) started strong, but eventually fell for the third time to No. 6-ranked Mortimer Jordan, 34-31.
As the area runner-up, Clay will travel to No. 3 Hartselle next Monday in sub-regional play.
GIRLS: No. 2 Vestavia Hills 66, No. 3 Hewitt-Trussville 60
The third-ranked Huskies lost to No. 2 Vestavia Hills 66-60 on Friday night in the Class 7A, Area 6 championship game. Hewitt-Trussville qualified for the tournament finals thanks to a 44-42 victory over No. 5 Spain Park on Tuesday.

Several local basketball teams have punched playoff tickets this week as area tournaments have begun across the state.
Per AHSAA rules, area champions and runner-ups advance into sub-regional play next week, creating a must-win scenario in the area semifinals.
The
Clay-Chalkville girls passed their test on Monday, advancing into the Class 6A, Area 12 tournament finals with a 56-29 win over 3-seed Pinson Valley. That win puts the Cougars (13-6) on the road Thursday night at No. 6 Mortimer Jordan after the Blue Devils knocked off 4-seed Gardendale 75-23.

Springville girls saw their season end on Monday in the first round of the Class 6A, Area 13 tournament. The 2-seed Tigers fell 52-42 to visiting Pell City, who moves on to face 1-seed Oxford in the tournament finals.
KIMBERLY The Clay-Chalkville boys have forced a coin toss.
With a 55-37 road win over Mortimer Jordan on Friday night, the No. 5-ranked Cougars have created a two-way tie with Pinson Valley atop the Class 6A, Area 12 standings. The crosstown rivals split the regular season series with Pinson Valley claiming the first meeting 61-39, followed by a 59-51 Clay-Chalkville victory three weeks later. Both teams swept their remaining area games over Gardendale and Mortimer Jordan to finish dead even in the final standings.
A coin toss will determine the regular season champion.
“It starts in our locker room,” said Clay-Chalkville head coach Jeremy Monceaux. “These kids have been in our program since the seventh grade all the way through, so there’s an expectation for how they come to work every day. We’ve got eight seniors, they are all unbelievable kids, unbelievable in the classroom and it’s starting to show on the floor as well.”
