HOOPS ROUNDUP: Springville wins 13th straight; Cougars pull even in Area 12; Pinson keeps rolling

High school basketball action is in full swing. Check below for game-by-game recaps involving local squads. The Springville boys hit the road on Friday night and came back with a 55-31 area win over Pell City. The Tigers (18-3, 4-1) finished with 15 assists on 22 made field goals as they pulled things out of reach. Springville started both halves strong with 16 points scored in the first period and 18 points in the third. The visitors led 24-10 at the break and stretched it to 42-17 after three complete. Jake Goolsby paced the Springville offense with 11 points, followed by Chase Higgins with 10 and Pearson Baldwin with nine. The Tigers have now won 13 straight after falling to Boaz 58-55 two days before Christmas.

Big second half lifts No 3 Pinson Valley over Clay-Chalkville 61-39

By Erik Harris, sports editor PINSON The No. 3-ranked Pinson Valley boys basketball team claimed its second area win of the week on Thursday night. Crosstown rival Clay-Chalkville (9-4, 0-1) made the short trip over, as the Indians scored 37 second-half points en route to a 61-39 victory in Mike Dutton Gymnasium. Pinson Valley (9-2, 2-0) saw four players score in double figures, including to JoJo James (19), TC Coner (16), Joshua Williams (13) and Moe Calloway (10). Calloway, a senior wing, also secured 10 boards to complete the double-double. The visiting Cougars defended well in the first half, leading 12-10 through the first eight minutes and later going to the break down 24-18. However, they struggled to defend the perimeter down the home stretch while Pinson Valley buried six second-half triples to stretch things out of reach.

GIRLS HOOPS: Clay-Chalkville handles Pinson in area play

By Erik Harris, sports editor PINSON The Clay-Chalkville girls basketball team opened up Class 6A, Area 12 play with a win on Thursday night in Mike Dutton Gymnasium. Cheyenne Pearson led the way with 10 points, the Cougars shot 28 free throws and pulled away in the second half for a 49-23 road victory over Pinson Valley. Defense traveled well for Clay-Chalkville, as the visitors held Pinson to only two first-half field goals, both coming in the second quarter. The Cougars were also a little slow to find their offense, but Kameron Sanders finished the first half with a nice mid-range bucket. She worked around a Pinson Valley defender with a ball-fake, stepped inside the arc and rattled down her team’s fourth basket of the half, which sent them to the locker room with a 17-8 advantage.

No 3 Pinson Valley wins area opener 55-23

By Erik Harris, sports editor KIMBERLY It took them about eight minutes to get warmed up but once the Pinson Valley boys settled in on Tuesday night, there was no stopping them. The third-ranked Indians (8-2, 1-0) allowed only nine points throughout the final three quarters of play, as they charged on to a 55-23 road win over Mortimer Jordan in the Class 6A, Area 12 opener for both teams. “I knew Mortimer Jordan was going to be a tough team,” said Pinson Valley head coach Darrell Barber. “What we’ve been preaching to our guys is defense and we held them to zero points in the second quarter and nine throughout the second half, so that’s the thing I’m most proud of and it’s always good to get an area win.”

Although many people reported little to no symptoms, some have reported severe illness. Around 1.72 deaths have been attributed to coronavirus. A person can remain infectious for up to two weeks after catching COVID-19.
