India on february 19th kickstarted a nine-day mega naval exercise in Visakhapatnam with participation of around 50 navies that came amid the fractious geopolitical environment including growing global concerns over deteriorating security situation in the Red Sea. Navies from the US, Japan, Australia, France, Bangladesh, South Korea, Vietnam, Indonesia and Malaysia, among others, are participating in the 12th edition of the Milan exercise that is aiming to bolster maritime cooperation among like-minded nations.

The exercise, involving 51 nations, includes table-top exercises, discussions, and a harbour phase simulating cooperative humanitarian missions. The presence of a US Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, two Russian warships, and an Iranian warship is notable. Despite strained ties, Quad nations India, US, Australia, and Japan will participate, with China notably absent from the invite list. Israel, though invited, has opted out due to current conditions.
