The harrowing experience of trying to navigate a shopping mall in a wheelchair was felt by 20 able-bodied people in East London on Saturday. People shopping at SuperSpar Nick’s in Berea watched in amazement and fascination as a “disabled” person with their legs strapped to the chair, and a “sight-impaired” pusher battled: ATMs too high for their reach, or rolling off a slanting ramp at the ATM;Drivers refusing to give the wheelchair team, drenched by rain, the right of way in the parking lo.
Buffalo City Metro says it needs just seven days of clear weather and it will fix all the potholes that have residents up in arms. Metro spokesperson Samkelo Ngwenya said this after the municipality hired three companies to fix potholes. The city, much like many municipalities across the country, has had a bad reputation with potholes, with some residents going as far as claiming for damages caused by the gaping cavities.
A 30m-wide whirlpool seen in the ocean off the Wild Coast could be linked to climate change. Whirlpools are dangerous for ocean users and this one was 245m off Rame Head point, East London Museum principal natural scientist Kevin Cole said.
A storm which stretched thousands of kilometres across the southern Indian Ocean sent a surge of giant 8.2m surf to the East Coast, closing the East London port. For surfers and paddlers, this was a 26-foot swell, similar to the size of surf ridden at the North Shore big wave break, at Waimea Bay, Hawaii.
