WHMI 93 5 Local News : Walk To End Alzheimer s Is Personal For Event Co-Chair

May 8, 2021 By Mike Kruzman & Jon King /news@whmi.com Registration is open for an annual walk to help raise awareness of and fight a brain disorder that destroys memory and thinking skills, and a co-chair of the event is sharing his inspiration for taking part. The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the Alzheimer’s Association’s largest fundraiser of the year. Money raised supports free educational programming, support groups, 1-on-1 care consultation, and their 24/7 helpline. In its 11th year locally, the Walk is moving forward with plans to host the October 2nd event in person, while continuing to monitor the pandemic and make decisions for the health and safety of everyone as needed.

May 8, 2021 By Mike Kruzman / news@whmi.com The Brighton District Library is hosting a 5 part series on women who played instrumental roles in the American Revolution. This spring, the Brighton Library is celebrating the wide spectrum of female participation in America’s founding conflict with the British. University of Maryland Professor Richard Bell will present Women in the American Revolution: A Five Part Series. These lectures will run for 5 consecutive Thursdays, beginning on May 20th, from 7 to 8pm over Zoom. The first lecture explores the wife of Benjamin Franklin’s sister Jane Mecom and the experiences of women on society’s bottom ranks during the war. The second lecture is of Deborah Sampson, who disguised herself as a man for 17 months to serve in the Continental Army. WHMI 93 5 Local News : Bond Revoked For White Supremacist Leader Charged In Dexter Threat

May 7, 2021 By Mike Kruzman / news@whmi.com Bond has been revoked for the leader of a white supremacist group charged with multiple felony counts, some related to a 2019 incident in Dexter. 25-year old Justen Watkins of Bad Axe is the self-proclaimed leader of The Base, a national white supremacist group with violent inclinations according to a release from Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel’s office. On a late evening in December 2019, he and an associate, 35-year-old Alfred Gorman of Taylor, allegedly dressed in dark clothing, shined a light and took pictures on a Dexter family’s front porch, mistaking it for the home of someone they believed to be in Antifa. They posted the pictures on the social media platform Telegram.

May 7, 2021 By Mike Kruzman / news@whmi.com The next time Brighton residents are free to attend an in-person City Council meeting, they’re likely to not recognize that the room they’re sitting in is the same room as before. By a slim 4-3 margin, Brighton City Council approved a complete makeover of council chambers, Thursday night. Clerk Tara Brown presented the plans as recommended by 3 members of the council that included Mayor Shawn Pipoly, Mayor Pro-Tem Susan Gardner, and Councilwoman Renee Pettingill. Clerk Tara Brown described a general feeling of accessibility with better ADA compliance, security features, and audio-visual equipment. The dais will be a half-circle with bullet-resistant panels recommended by police Chief Rob Bradford. WHMI 93 5 Local News : Genoa Board Tables Motion To Pay Clerk s Legal Fees

May 5, 2021 By Mike Kruzman / news@whmi.com The decision on whether to allow taxpayer dollars to assist the legal defense of Genoa Township’s long-time clerk will come after the case is ajudicated. A single misdemeanor charge of Election Law – Failure to Perform Duty was filed by against Genoa Township Clerk Polly Skolarus. A Michigan State Police report obtained by WHMI revealed multiple election officials, including several Livingston County clerks, stated that they saw Skolarus wheel in unapproved canvas bags with excess absentee ballots used in last November’s election. She reportedly admitted at the time that it was her fault and that she had instructed election workers to use the bags. However, in a memo to the Genoa Township Board of Trustees dated March 30th, Skolarus claimed she was not aware that workers placed ballots in the unapproved canvas bags.
