let s start with the meeting yesterday, the house republicans meeting at the white house with president obama to talk with some kind of a deal, whether or not one can be made. paul ryan asking the president to stop gem goinging the issue of medicare. it sounds like they didn t make a whole lot of progress behind closed doors. pat? i think it was a lost opportunity and we may be losing them right up to the august deadline, willie. but the really bad news yesterday was the collapse of the market. the report on manufacturing down, consumer confidence down. housing prices under water for 23% of the american home owners. i think the real fear now is that this country is headed into a double-dip recession. and if it does, barack obama is in serious trouble. let s start with that. it was a brutal start to the new trading month on wall street, u.s. markets posted their sharpest decline in a year. in the wake of weak economic data and renewed fears of greece s financial crisis.
including massachusetts where some major storms are rumbling through and we have breaking news out of there. take a look at this video, a tornado has just touched down in springfield, massachusetts, just about an hour ago and it was into the river and moving into the city s south section. the office emergency preparedness tells nbc news there are numerous injuries, but no deaths so far. the fire department says several hundred houses have been affected by this tornado. you can see there we ve also had reports of cars overturned and tractor trailers overturned as well and guys, i was just looking at some of the national service pages and a tornado warning just to the south wooster massachusetts. they are still tracking that tornado on the ground and they ll continue to be watching that one as it continues to move to the south and east, most likely well to the south and east of the boston area. again, well south of boston, but right now, well south of woofter and we ll continue
elderly. children, especially infants, aren t able to talk, so they re not able to tell you when they re very hot or when they re sweating. so in the elderly population, especially those with heart problems, any people that are diabetics, people with thyroid problems are on a lot of medications that aller your function with water and salt. doctors also reminds folks to pay attention to the signs of heat stroke, which include confusion, nausea, light-headedness, hot body temperature and hot, dry, flushed skin. the city is also putting out the word to drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol and caffeine, reduce outside activities, wear lightweight and light-colored clothing, and always check on older, sick or frail neighbors. as far as the four centers that opened today, they ll be open for another hour. then tomorrow, with the heat index expected to be over 100 degrees, the city is going to open six additional cooling centers for a total of 10. if you d like to know which o

destructive storms in the same areas that got hit hard monday. overnight a high risk warning from texas to tennessee, it includes a large part of arkansas, where the storms are now blamed for at least 11 deaths. some 35 tornadoes were reported, but that number is expected to jump, and this twister touched down southeast of dallas tuesday afternoon. there are reports of some damage, but no injuries. folks elsewhere, though, were not as lucky. joel brown has been tracking the storms overnight from washington. good morning, joel. what s the latest? betty, good morning. no mercy this tornado season as residents spent another night scrambling for cover across several states. it s like a recurring weather nightmare. i waited in my bedroom and crawled under the bed and waited under it. reporter: for the second straight night a powerful line of thunderstorms including a pack of tornadoes pounded the southern plains. arkansas took another direct hit. at least one person died. da
