Women s History Month: Local teacher was a botany expert

Spring has arrived as evidenced by sighting the first of our loon pair on Tamarack Lake here in Lakeview, as well as the flights of geese and sandhill cranes flying overhead. As spring unfolds, it is a great time to get out and walk in the woods and look for those tiny botanical signs of the season. I recall, how years ago, walking along the wooden high bank of the Muskegon River near our home in Newaygo, I came upon a sea of trout lilies, with their leaves brown speckled like their namesake. Also, I found a scattering of miniature white pantaloons aptly named Dutchman’s breeches.
