And close to the mid 70s here in wilmington, 75 in dover. And we do have that humidity out there, dew points are kind of high. Police say the shots that turned the streets behind me in the killing zone, taking the lives of five Police Officers and wounding 11 others and a civilian. Tonight the nation shares dallass anxiety and shock at how a Police Protest against the death of a black man. As marchers rang in fear from the shots, police took cover and desperately tried to neutralize the attacker. Tonight we have learned that the sniper is an army war veteran. Reporter the ambush was well planned, well thought out and evil, police say. Hundreds of protesters caught in the cross fire, while officers were targeted in cold blood. I didnt see anybody else get shot, it was just the cops. Reporter tonight the gunman is identified as 24yearold Micah Johnson. He was wearing body armor and he was laughing and singing durin
Johnson is from the dallas area, according to the source. Now, heres what we know right now. 12 officers and two civilians were shot, in what police call an ambush attack. Five officers were killed, including one transit officer. Police negotiated with johnson in the parking garage. He was killed when police sent a bomb that was attached to a robot. Nbc 10s matt delucia has more for us from our digital operations center. Matt . Vai, we heard from the Dallas Police chief and the mayor earlier this morning, giving us an update on the situation. There was a standoff with one of the suspects for several hours, and chief david brown said a negotiator tried to end that standoff peacefully. The negotiations broke down, he said, and there was no other option than to use a bomb attached to a robot and kill the suspect. Police were able to get some information out of him before that happened. The chief said the man was upset with the recent Police Shootings and wanted to kill white officers. He

Never in our wildest dreams would we have imagined that five Police Officers would be dead this morning. This was a wellplanned, wellthought out, evil tragedy. The night before an otherwise peaceful protest in dallas became the single deadliest day for Law Enforcement since 9 11. Police say 25yearold Micah Xavier Johnson a former Army Reservist with no criminal record used rifle to shoot five officers in an ambush. Five were killed and two civilians were injured. Get them here a standoff lasted hours. When negotiations broke police used robot to plant an explosive. The suspect died in the blast. We are horrified over these events and we stand united with people. And the Police Department in dallas.
