Since 2012 in so many different sections of the capitol grounds, in another case weeks ago Capitol Police seized a stolen gun from a person suspected of driving drunk on the grounds. Another gun seized at the library of congress, one from a person carrying it in plain sight near the capitol visitors center. Capitol police tell us these seizures are the byproduct of their police work. 1700plus officers in the agency. But our investigation is raising a question, do Capitol Police have enough money . A u. S. Senate report last month said the Police Agency has been under significant budget constraints. Sequestration which chopped departments forced the department to close some public entrances. They are probably stretched thin because of the sequester, one of the first places you begin is with the police who guard not me sitting here in the capitol but millions of our constituents who come here every single day. The people across america. And good morning, everyone. Welcome to news4 midday, im barbara harrison. Its wednesday, january 29th, 2014. And right now, the hard freeze is affecting the deep south. Six states declared emergencies. Georgia is one of the hardesthit areas. Right now, the mayor of atlanta says people are still stranded on the highways because of the icy roads. This morning, georgia governor nathan dooel ordered the National Guard into their humvees to rescue stranded students on a bus and drivers stranded on the highway. Thousands of people never made it home last night. Many drivers abandoned their cars on the highway and walked to safety. More than 900 accidents were reported in georgia in the last 24 hours. Well, the same system that brought a fresh coating of snow overnight in our region, news4s Melissa Malay said it happened reporter i may look like i have a lot of sun, but its 12 degrees here. Along chambridge road with ice in the area, but no accidents reported there. Well head down to Charles County right now, this is northbound livingston road at Metropolitan Church road with a report of an accident heading towards 210 and northbound livingston road. The trip to haymarket is not seeing any delays. You can see the eastbound volume here picking up, but no major delays just yet. And no accidents as folks continue to the beltway. Now to a developing story out of Montgomery County where police are looking into a smash and grab robbery. This happened just before 2 30 at the Subway Restaurant on old columbia pike in burtonsville. The thieves took the money and security system, so theres no Surveillance Footage at the time. Officers are shifting through the broken glass to find any clue to help identify the criminals. Well have a live report from the scene coming up at 6 45.
