i m chris jansing in for jose diaz-balart. right now on capitol hill, democratic lawmakers are about to gather for a remembrance event marking two years since the deadly insurrection at the u.s. capitol lawmakers, staff and law enforcement fear for their lives after a pro-trump mob stormed the halls of congress. norma torres will account her experience on that terrible day. we re day four of an intense speakership battle where a group made up of 2020 election deniers is rebebl belling against kevin mccarthy s bid throwing congress into paralysis. mccarthy isn t backing down. we re going to make progress. we re going to shock you. why? why what? how are you going to shock us today? you re going to get there today? i don t know, you ll see progress. reporter: a brand now gnu jobs report shows a better than expected 222,000 jobs were added in december. we ll ask the labor secretary what this means for the state of our economy. also this hour, we ll take you live
vote for house speaker starts right now. any minute the house gavels in without a speaker for a third straight day. congress caught in the grips of chaos. no deal to end a first in a century clash over who becomes the next speaker of the united states house of representatives. i m erin burn net in new york and you are watching cnn s special live coverage. i m jake tapper in washington. the talks between republican leader kevin mccarthy and his allies and the 20 conservative rebels have been the most productive conversations yet in a week characterized by breakdowns, backroom bitterness, back stabbing and six very public rebukes of mccarthy and mccarthy has offered the 20 hard-line hold-outs a cornucopia of concessions including ones dealing with the rules such as lowering the threshold to recall a speaker. you only need a single vote according to what mccarthy offered but the outlines of a deal running the risk of alienating the 200 some member was voted for mccarthy ag
mexico and attempting to enter the united states without going through our legal processes. we responded by using and ensuring there are two safe and lawful ways for someone leaving the country to come to america. that was one of the reasons you were proposing. first, if they are seeking asylum, they can use an app on their phone called cbpone. that s to spell it out. not the number 1. to schedule an appointment at a port of entry and make their asylum claim there without crossing the border unlawfully and have a decision determined by an asylum officer, do they qualify? second, in october we worked with the mexican government to launch a new parole program. there s another program you know it but the public may not. it immediately showed results by reducing the number of people crossing the border unlawfully. the way this parole program works, one must have a lawful sponsor here in the united states who agrees to sponsor you to get here. then that person has to go good
i m thinking of the house republicans and the grateful dead if you plant ice you will harvest wind, which is one of those lines that could mean anything, but sometimes what it means to me at least is, yeah, you put stuff in the ground that is not a seed, that is not meant to grow, it s not going to work with the surrounding environment. what are you going to get? and i was watching your coverage and thinking what you said that this is what they want. how do you negotiate with someone for a solution when the actual think they would quote, negotiate for is no solution? is what they re getting. i m glad you went back toest because republicans frankly fewer and fewer used to call me during the trump years. what do you want from us? we said grab them in the bleep wasn t ideal but you re still for him, you re still helping him beat his opponent who s a better choice, who isn t a threat to national security which all republicans are knew believed he was. so the bet was always to
reporter: all of these options are thorny. if they go to another round of balloting, it s not clear i would be surprised if mccarthy were able to peel off the number of people that he needs from this 20 no vote coalition on his side to actually become speaker on this next ballot. what we are hearing is that the mccarthy team could go for a motion to adjourn until tomorrow. you are right, that would buy them time. it would save them another round of embarrassment if he were to lose on this fourth ballot. as i was walking over here, i tried to find some key members of that 20 no vote coalition to ask if they would support that motion to adjourn. right now, democrats have said they will not represent republicans do that. they are whipping against that motion. republicans would have to go it alone. they would not be able to pass that motion to adjourn unless some of these 20 republicans were also on board and supportive of it. i talked, for example, with congressman andy bigg
