substantive rules, and that matters if you are kevin mccarthy. maybe the number who wants substantive changes is like six or seven. that s not enough to get him there. so the number really matters a lot, but it s interesting to me because we just talked to congresswoman spartz, and congressman buck, and both of them think that negotiation is a path forward. so those members who are in the chamber right now still think that there is a way to have a conversation that moves this forward, and that it s not just personality. i think for at least four members, they re hard-nosed and kevin mccarthy won t get them. we don t know what the other number is, and that s hugely important in this moment, even byron donalds who started out in the mccarthy camp, and he s entertaining something that a lot of the members, a vast majority of members thought it was crazy. a one-person note to vacate. a lot of members are coming back
the result that he has wanted. the emissaries of his have reached out to the detractors and have not gotten a full sense of what they want. some will not get there and jim jordan who is a mccarthy ally pushed by those dissidents told me he went to them and urged them not to nominate him here. he had been nominated twice yesterday despite his opposition for challenging mccarthy. they listened to him and decided not to nominate jordan but by nominating byron donalds they are showing they are not moving anywhere near the mccarthy camp so the question now is what happens after this vote? the vote automatically would happen in the fifth ballot unless they seek to move to adjourn. now, it s unclear what will happen after this so a lot of questions for mccarthy, his future but he indicated to me he s still push ago head and believes he can get there even though he hasn t been able to. and is there still talk about
the people in the country right now are looking at this and saying, what is going on? why can t this party get it together and unify so we can hold biden accountable? remember, republicans, we have so much more common than what is dividing us right now. if we can t come together and take on the biden administration, the people who elected us or being let down. that is what they are seeing right now because of these holdouts refusing to elect a speaker of the house for the first time in 100 years. i think we need to come together and unify, we need to unify and our opposition to the democrats. right now, this is not helping our party. sandra: ronna, going back to the last question who can merchant the last few days the freedom caucus indicating that they would nominate a new candidate. are you right now rejecting the idea that anyone other than mccarthy can move republicans in this new congress? i just don t see movement from the mccarthy camp. i don t see many members who are going
second, manu, what did he have to say. he s not moving off his opposition or aligning himself with a number of conservative member, hard-liners who want a number of demands to strengthen the rank and file, weaken the speakership, things that kevin mccarthy says he already has agreed to but roy making clear to me that he is almost certainly not going to be in the mccarthy camp. the people of the table and the rules committee or otherwise guarantee that will enforce the rules we just talked about. by the way, everybody in that republican congress meeting this morning said, oh, we like the rules, good job, chip, you guys worked hard for the rules and then at the end they said but if you don t vote for mccarthy, we re going to get rid of the rues. it s a game. that s the game and actually put a quote on the board that said something in the zip code of, hey, for the part of trying to put people on the committee with diverse views and kevin said that but a whole lot of people in the ro
