The Amathole District Municipality faces the risk of losing its water services provision status due to glaring failures to provide its people with clean water.This was revealed on Thursday by co-operative governance and traditional affairs MEC Zolile Williams during a water indaba organised by ADM at Regent Hotel in East London.
The Eastern Cape has the second-highest percentage of households in the country a whopping 19.5% who have no access to piped water in their areas. And many of these households have to share their water source dams, rivers and streams in rural areas with animals.
When 11-year-old Lilitha Matshisi was asked to hop onto a kayak earlier in 2023, he found himself shaking with fear. “I have never been that scared in my life. I kept on thinking, what if I drown?” Meanwhile, 14-year-old Akhumzi Ndabeni felt a huge adrenaline rush. He has been swimming in rivers for as long as he can remember and the prospect of trying his hand at kayaking excited him.
