Pressure is building on an ANC councillor and a well-known East London boxer over a company they previously owned which scored several tenders at the Amathole district municipality. ADM councillor Nomfesane Nyatela has now been raided twice by the Hawks, allegedly due to tenders scored by two companies she used to own which received business with the ADM.
The Amathole district municipality paid hundreds of millions of rand for questionable tenders, with more than R230m between 2017 and this year paid to service providers whose contracts have been red-flagged by the ailing council’s new leadership. The struggling municipality has recently battled to pay staff salaries.
Service delivery at the Amathole district municipality stands to take a big knock, with almost half a billion rand meant for infrastructure development in danger of being forfeited to the National Treasury as the ailing council struggles to spend its conditional grant allocation. The council’s dismal spending has been blamed on an ongoing staff protest in the form of a go-slow.
