Legislation was presented and discussed Monday night during a council work session.
The proposal, made by Councilman Mark Lombardi, R-Ward 1, would hire an animal control specialist for up to 28 hours a week. Further discussion was pushed to June 14.
Lombardi wanted to provide time to fulfill Councilwoman Linda Litman s request to review an updated job description for city building code enforcement officers, who Mayor Kathy Catazaro-Perry said have been handling animal control-related duties.
The mayor is not in favor of creating the new position, and said doing so would waste money. Police officers handle animal-related calls when code enforcement is off duty, she added.

MASSILLON – About a dozen curious seeds showed up on a cool Friday morning to give life to a tree in Community Park.
Representatives from the city of Massillon, FirstEnergy electric service company and Wright Tree Service assisted with a tree-planting ceremony to honor Arbor Day. This is something we do (about) every year at a different Massillon park, said Steve Pedro, director of the city s Parks and Recreation Department.
Last year s Arbor Day celebration was canceled due to the COVID-19 crisis, Pedro said.
First Energy donated a small pine tree that was planed in a northwest section of the park. Workers from Wright prepped the ground.
MASSILLON – Democrats have the only contested races in the upcoming May 4 primary election for City Council.
Races in Wards 4 and 6 both place two Democrat candidates against each other for the party nomination, en route to the November general election.

Vying to replace City Councilwoman Linda Litman for the open Ward 6 seat are Democrats Joe Herrick and Bob Fothergill. Litman is switching gears, and is the lone candidate for city treasurer in November.
Herrick, 59, is a retired Massillon Police Department captain who said Litman s pending departure from council prompted him to run. I saw an open seat, and thought now is as good of time as any to try, said Herrick, who is making his first bid for public office.
