when you see that you can get a tornado to spin up as winds tilt. as far as what we are expecting afternoon hours, tuesday. the atmosphere sort of refires, reloads and refires. still the same all of the same ingredients in place. drier air moving out of the deserts. cool air mass in the upper midwest, the northern plains, moving south. deep moisture drawn in. those three come together, we see storms. and energy overhead, we can get the storms to rotate and that can bring the tornado. we are watching the arklatex. for the tornadoes to form. widespread of severe weather all the way to north of chicago. widespread, large hail, damaging winds, likely as we head through the day. jim, this has preliminary been rated as an ef-4. we talk ef-4s, that s devastation. but the winds here were so incredibly strong, any chance it could be upgraded? i think absolutely there s a very strong chance it could be upgraded. i have seen conflicting reports it already has. not sure if that is true or no
unfortunately, we did have one fatality. it was a 65-year-old man. he was actually injured prior to the storm 37. he was running to a storm shelter. he fell, hit his head and later succumbed to the injuries. all the preparations were made in advance. we had the staff ready, the equipment ready. we just it was kind of a wait and see scenario. everything just happened very quickly. we received our last patient roughly around 9:00 this evening central time. i m told it was a teacher from one of the schools that was hit. i can say that she s in fair or good condition, so that s great news. but our tornado influx has definitely slowed as of now. we see several tornadoes in oklahoma. of course, may 3rd being the worst until today. we re hopeful that we do receive more patients because i know that there are several people that are still unaccounted for.
mainly now gusty, straight-line winds, primary concern. anywhere you see the storms bow out, arch out here, radar indication of strong, gusty winds. winds howling in the storms. moving eastward, indianapolis, chicago as we speak. pushing towards memphis. then again, back to oklahoma. south of moore, thankfully. strong storms firing, high res models. this is where we will start things off here, round two, three, on tuesday. same setup of ingredients coming together. push of dry air out of the deserts. cool air, northern plains, pushing south. warm, humid air drawn out of the gulf of mexico. that deep moisture, the fuel for these storms. then the jet stream overhead. winds tilting with height. that s how we can spin up a tornado. a wide area impacted by storms here today. the main widespread threat, large hail, damaging winds. as we head into the arklatex, little rock, austin, dallas, good chance for tornadoes to fire up once again.
