It didn’t take long.
Striped bass season opened on Monday and initial reports were pretty good with keepers caught in Raritan Bay and the rivers down south. There were plenty of shorts caught and released as well.
Reports also circulated of a few winter flounder caught by the Mantoloking Bridge and in Belmar.
Granted, the bite is far from hot, but we’re off to a good start. Warmer, sunny days are in the forecast and that will only help the cause.
The Tackle Box in Hazlet posted this photo of Tommy Karindrakas of Long Branch with his opening day striper caught in Raritan Bay.

Capt. Ryan Namowitz caught these two tog aboard the Mimi VI out of Point Pleasant Beach last weekend.
It’s painful to report that the fishing still stinks.

Rick Hebert at Tackle World in Rochelle Park said that folks fishing through the ice are doing well with crappie, perch, pickerel and the occasional bass at Lake Hopatcong, Greenwood Lake and other local lakes and ponds.
The Ocean Explorer out of Belmar had a good day blackfishing last week with multiple double-digit fish.
Fishing Report for New Jersey
A couple of days of driving snow, gale-force winds and freezing temperatures brought the slow fishing to a full stop.

Party and charter boats that are still sailing hope to be back out by the end of the week once the ocean calms down.
