Outreach teams to monitor the homeless. Political reporter dave evans is at city hall. Reporter every night there are 50,000 men, women and children living in new york city shelters. The mayor is not talking so much about them but the 3 to 4,000 people that live on the street and panhandle. The experts say there are probably more than that but they praised the mayor for finally addressing the problem. The homeless situation in new york has gone from bad to worse this year. In the last few weeks police dismantled about 30 homeless encampments. He is spending millions on Homeless Housing with on Site Social Services and he is doing something about the street homeless and aggressive panhandling. I want to underscore the point that we are going to go at this problem with everything we got and when we hear a report of someone in distress, someone in need we will go there compassionately, but we will not tolerate any form of illegal activity. Id like to show you and the Police Commissioner a picture that was taken on saturday night on broadway and 68th street and im wondering why nobodys done anything about it. The plan announced today by the mayor would have Rapid Response teams from every block every day. Responding within one hour to reports of homeless encampments made to 311 and 100 cops to illegal activity and the response teams. William bratton says hes hopeful it will finally make a difference. Very optimistic about it. They are service resistent people. You talked about noticing an up surge in the homeless as you walk the streets in the neighborhood where you live. Commissioner of Homeless Services under giuliani and bloomberg said de blasioss homestat program might work. Right now, the present system is not working. Recent statistics show that the outreach teams made 333 contacts but only four placements. The Police Commissioner says that other changes to the laws are being considered.
