But for this Homeless Outreach team, work is just beginning. With the sound of rumbling trains in the background and the sight of a man with numerous bags who appears homeless, not everyone always is, team members make their move at the chambers street station in lower manhattan. They try to encourage him to come inside to one of their beds or dropin centers with the ultimate goal of permanent housing. But he did not want the help, something rodrigo understands. I have a drug addiction. Thats the reason why im homeless. Because of drugs. Reporter we met him outside the west 4th street station. He says these outreach teams have also tried to help him. They cant help you unless youre going to make the first decision to help yourself. Reporter you havent done that yet . Not yet. I have not. Reporter from drug addiction to emotional problems to severe mental illness, outreach workers are up against everything. Its tough, you know . Not everyone accepts our services on the first time or the tenth time or the 100th time but we always continue to engage with them. Reporter over the last several weeks, we spent some very late nights in the subways getting a firsthand look at how the city and the mta are trying to combat homelessness underground. Theres a significant issue for the mta. We know its a concern for our customers. Its a concern for us. Reporter Aaron Eisenberg is with the Citys Department of Homeless Services. New yorkers are frustrated with homelessness on the streets and in the subways. What do you say to new yorkers who are wondering is anything being done about it specifically in the Transit System . What do you say to those people . Okay, what i say is that the lifelong new yorkerer, theres always been homelessness. No matter what we do people will end up homeless. Today we are fortunate that we have more resources than before. Reporter that includes a nonprofit committee. About a year ago, the mta and the city boosted brcs contract to 6 million to do Homeless Outreach in the subways. Teams also work in hubs like penn station. The Department Says staff will increase to 90 by the end of this month. Eisenberg says they have had more than 1,000 homeless placements since july of 2014. The department of Homeless Services says outreach work like what you see behind me takes place 24 hours a day, seven days a week, every, single day of the year in all five boroughs. The nypd also plays a role. Do you have a place to sleep tonight . Not yet. Do you need any help . No. Reporter here in cone of concern, officers from the Homeless Outreach unit work the last stop of the n line. The nypd usually goes out on joint operations with brc. Were not looking to go out and take enforcement against them. Obviously, if theres violations well correct those but we want to offer outreach to the homeless. Reporter violations like causing a disturbance or lying down on a platform or train. Others, legally, they can only encourage people to voluntarily accept help. While many dont back in manhattan this man may have made that choice agreeing to an appointment with homeless morning. Andrea grymes, cbs 2 news. We did ask the City Department of Homeless Services if this contracted Subway Program is part of the comprehensive review of the but we have not heard back. An mta Spokesman Says that they are also trying to learn more. He adds, they are very happy to work with the brc and they are happy with what theyre doing. Disney says it has added metal detectors to its visitor screening process. The parks are also beginning sales or i should say banning sales of toy guns an will no longer allow them to be brought in. Guests ages 14 and over will wearing costumes. Disney says the changes are part of it ongoing review of security procedures and not due to any specific threats. A breakthrough in Ovarian Cancer published in the medical journal the lancet. Doctors say they can get the death rate by 20 with a blood test. The screening looks for changes in a marker called ca125. The test offers the benefit of Early Detection but a change in the numbers does not always mean the patient has cancer. If you do three surgeries one of the women will have Ovarian Cancer so there still is a false positive risk that is you can go through surgery and potentially not need it. Now according to the study if the screening were implemented nationwide, it could save 3500 lives a year. Max gomez here now to explain whats going on. Doctor. Reporter yeah. This is a little unusual. Craving pickles may be about needing salt. Ice cream could be about something called sweet and rich in carbs. But how do you explain cravings to eat dirt, paper, rubber . Something is missing in the body and cant be treat. When this woman was pregnant chrissys house was being built at the time and she was surrounded by dirt and she was overcome by an urge to eat it. Times that i actually did just because it just because overwhelming you know, the craving that gritty taste, um, so, yeah, it was it was creepy. Reporter its not as odd as you might think. Its a condition called pica that was first described in 500 ad and although the cravings may be unusual, the condition isnt. Some women feel ashamed to talk to you about it. People say between 8 and 80 of pregnancies can be associated with this condition. Reporter this doctor is at Ohio State University wexner medical center. She has seen women craving everything from dirt to ashes, rubber bands, paper, and even powdered laundry detergent. Most of the time its caused by low levels of zinc or iron and is easily treated. Most women i will put on an iron supplement and they actually tend to start to feel better or have less of those kind of cravings. Weird cravings. Reporter chrissy satisfied her cravings for a gritty texture by eating antacids instead of dirt. As soon as her son was born, the cravings were gone. Educate yourself and realize that its not that big of a deal. And it is a craving that will pass. Reporter now, most of the time eating small amount of things like paper or dirt isnt all that harmful. Doctors are more concerned by things that contain chemicals like detergent or things that are hard to digest like rubber bands. Tell your doctor about your cravings no matter how strange because they may be able to help you get over them. I know. [ laughter ] what can i tell you . Kristine i know. You know, a little dirt dont hurt. [ laughter ] but no, i mean, i had no idea about this. And when we were reading about it before the broadcast, i thought, my goodness. To give you a sense of 59 degrees the normal high today is 42. So we were well above that and for the months so far the average temperature of is 14. 5 degrees above normal. In fact, it would be very challenging at this point for us not to set a new record for the warmest december on record. Right now, its held at 44. 1 degrees as the average temperature so far this month. 52 degrees is the average temperature and while we have some very cold air that will be diving in for the weekend, next week is looking well above average again, with temperatures in the 60s around christmas day. Christmas day could also be in the 60s. So this weekend seasonably cold air after that back to abnormally warm. On the vortex satellite and radar picture right now, we can watch the rain quickly exiting east. Its all associated with a cold front and as it makes its way out, we will be left with drizzle.
