officers officers. reporter: pentagon force protection police chief says investigators are still counting up all the rounds that were fired in the middle of rush hour last night at a metro stop that was miraculously free of bystanders [ inaudible ] two pentagon force protection officers are recovering at home now. jeffrey amos was hit in the thigh. his colleague marvin carraway insisted on walking in the hospital with a superficial wound to his shoulder. we have medic coming for the patient [ inaudible ] transport to gw. at this time respiratory arrest. reporter: john patrick bedell died soon after arriving at gw with a shot to the arm and a massive gunshot wound to the head. investigates believe he acted alone. he was very well dressed, in a suit. there was no indication, based on the way he was dressed he had hostile intent. reporter: investigators say john patrick bedell went on a cross country odyssey from california to washington in a toyota avalon loaded with
there was indication that he had possible intent. one eyewitness told us there is no warning. he simply started firing hitting police officers before he was shot. this sent commuters scrambling. [inaudible] i heard a lot of gunshots and everybody was saying to get down and run. why the attack? police say he posted videos about his distrust for the government and he questioned the 9/11 attacks. the moral values are increasingly attacked by a political system where deceit is routine and accepted and the only standard is power. his family reportedly had him committed several times and was worried he was becoming dangerous and had bought weapons but they had no idea he would try from california all the way to the pentagon to act on those urges. we may never know why he made this terrible decision. one thing is certain, his actions were caused by an illness and not a defect of character. due to that illness, his family said he was committed three or four times recent
well-armed. i will tell you he had two semiautomatic weapons and many magazines. reporter: so far the investigation reveals that before the shooting, john patrick bedell parked his 1998 green joyota avalon in the mall parking lot. fbi officials have impounded the vehicle and are still awaiting a search warrant, but pentagon police say they ve already discovered additional evidence in the car. more ammunition. now, while they know where he parked his car, they re still trying to figure out how he got to the pentagon. they don t know if he went through the mall and then took the subway or if he walked over from the pentagon shopping mall parking lot over to the pentagon. that s a part of their ongoing investigation. they re also going to be taking a look at his cell phone usage. they re going to look at all the places he stopped along from the west coast to the east coast, trying to get a better idea of his frame of mind. they also have video of this shooting that they
treated underground. everybody was saying to get down and run. police say they are unsure of his motives but are sure the system worked. officers reacted instantly, protected the public and in the end, stopped a man from his goal of killing people. we took the appropriate actions. it worked. i am not going to change how we do business. investigators say they are going over surveillance tape of the shooting. all of it, even though it was only about one minute, was caught on surveillance tape. they are closely taking a look of the events that led up to that moment. they said they are going over the car the end of the have found quite a bit of ammunition. thank you. it will be interesting to see that video. the pentagon metro station has reopened. there are no delays reported tonight. some of his own words may shed light on why he made the long drive from california to carry out that attack. we now know that bedell s parents were worried about him. his family filed
welcome to 9 news now. i m angie goff in for j.c. today we are learning more about the suspected gunman killed in the pentagon subway shooting. investigators say they found internet postings linked to john patrick bedell of california. they suggest that he was frustrated with the u.s. military and outlines a deep seeded distrust of the federal government. kristin fisher has been following the story all morning and is live near the pentagon with more. good afternoon, kristin. reporter: good afternoon. the big question is still motive. police are investigating and searching for clues in those web postings that were allegedly written by the shooter. they are also searching for clues in video surveillance footage of the suspect before the shooting. it shows him cool, calm, well dressed. he was wearing a suit and police say he showed no signs of what he was about to do. 36-year-old john patrick bedell strolled up to a pentagon security check point on thursday evening and owned
