Addressing his monthly radio programme 'Mann Ki Baat', PM Modi also announced that from next year the Republic Day will be celebrated from January 23 to January 30 every year.
Union minister Hardeep Singh Puri and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla too joined Kovind and Modi and a two-minute silence was observed in honour of Gandhi, who was assassinated on January 30, 1948. His death anniversary is observed as Martyrs' Day.
"I urge everyone to try and visit the National War Memorial with their family. You will feel a special kind of energy and inspiration," Prime Minister Modi said.
Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan tweeted, "Mahatma Gandhi was murdered by the very forces that still slaughter people in the name of religion. They are the biggest threat to our country today."
Martyrs' Day or Shaheed Diwas is celebrated in India to remember freedom fighters who laid down their lives to help make India independent. While the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on January 30 is the most prominent Martyrs' Day, there are six others as well.
