Lee Women Advance In Gulf South Tournament Wednesday, March 3, 2021 Haley Schubert poured in a career-high 33 points in Tuesday s GSC Quarterfinal win at West Alabama. The Lee University women’s basketball team is moving onto the semifinal round of the Gulf South Conference tournament after a 70-61 victory over host West Alabama in the quarterfinal of the tournament on Tuesday evening. The Lady Flames will continue the road journey on Friday facing top-seed Valdosta State. Lee is 1-2 against the Blazers this season but dropped the last meeting in an overtime thriller. The winner will advance to the championship round at a neutral site to be determined.
Lee Women Win Big Over Shorter 85-49 Sunday, February 7, 2021 The Lee women’s basketball team got off to a quick start in the opening quarter, outscoring visiting Shorter University 26-7 and was never threatened in an 85-49 Gulf South Conference victory on Saturday evening inside Walker Arena. The Lady Flames improved to 8-5 while the Lady Hawks slipped to 2-11. “I thought our team came out determined to get off to a good start,” said Coach Marty Rowe. “We weren’t quite as sharp defensively tonight. We fouled too much in the first half and got out-rebounded. The ability to take care of the ball for quality possessions is definitely a step in the right direction.”
Lee s Ally Welfel: So Much More Than A Cancer Survivor Thursday, February 4, 2021 - by George Starr
Ally Welfel
Unmistakably, what captures the attention of most about Ally Welfel is an 18-year-old girl with a big smile and very little hair. She is always with the Lee basketball team in practice and games. Ally is a young lady who has shown so much courage in her fight back from cancer.
Surrounded by Christian faith: Ally attended (Nashville) Goodpasture, a Christian school, and a place where she could be surrounded by faith. Lee basketball coaches Marty Rowe and Jan Spangler recruited this 5-foot-10 athlete, whom they felt could step in and immediately help the program. “Lee gave me a similar feel as Goodpasture, a place where I could continue to grow spiritually. Lee has supported me through this difficult time. I know God has placed me here for a reason,” she proclaimed.
Lee Women Lose At Montevallo Saturday, January 30, 2021 Host University of Montevallo outscored the Lee women 25-17 in the final 10 minutes in posting a key GSC victory over the Lady Flames on Saturday afternoon. It is the second straight loss and dropped Lee to 6-4 and Montevallo improved to 6-3. This one hurts because we competed like crazy for the most part today. We ve still got a ways to go with this team, things that that we can control, said Lee Coach Marty Rowe. Montevallo just finished better down the stretch today. Tomorrow is a great opportunity for a change. The same two teams will battle again on Sunday, at 3 p.m.
Late Rally Not Enough For Lee Lady Flames At West Florida Saturday, January 23, 2021
A third quarter letdown that saw the Lee women s basketball team outscored by host West Florida 19-6, resulted in the Lady Argonauts building a 21-point lead (60-39) with 7:10 remaining in the contest. The Lady Flames battled back in the final seven minutes but it was not nearly enough in the 71-61 loss. We were thoroughly outplayed and outcoached today, said a disappointed Lee coach Marty Rowe after his team dropped to 6-3 while West Florida improved to 3-4. No excuses, we have got to find a better sense of urgency as a group or this is going to be a continual theme for this team.
