After a gruelling year of fundraising events, Selborne College and the larger East London community were able to surpass their goal for pupil Ubuko Mpotulo and raise more than R600,000 towards his mechanical hand. The story of Ubuko has been followed by many. At only three years old he contracted viral meningitis and lost both legs and several fingers.
Valentine’s Day this year was extra special for 65-year-old Nomthandazo Zenani after East London orthotics and prosthetics company Marissa Nel & Associates measured, manufactured and fitted her with a custom-made orthosis on Sunday. Zenani, who has been struggling to get an orthosis a hi-tech brace through state facilities for almost nine years, suffered a severe tibia and fibula fracture as a child.
