After a gruelling year of fundraising events, Selborne College and the larger East London community were able to surpass their goal for pupil Ubuko Mpotulo and raise more than R600,000 towards his mechanical hand. The story of Ubuko has been followed by many. At only three years old he contracted viral meningitis and lost both legs and several fingers.
This year the Local Hero gala event was a night of rose gold glamour in honour of 12 winners whose work helping their communities stood out from more than 50 nominees. In the first in-person event since 2019, the Daily Dispatch and Johnson & Johnson Local Heroes awarded the selected finalists with R20,000 and a professionally shot video of their projects.
