A former police inspector has recalled the dramatic moment he looked notorious serial killer Charles Sobhraj in the eyes and uttered: Hello Charles. How are you?
Sobhraj s gruesome crimes are currently being revisited in The Serpent, a nail-biting BBC One/Netflix drama that details his killing spree along Asia s hippie trial in the mid 1970s as he preyed on young backpackers.
Sobhraj is believed to have killed up to 24 travellers, the majority of them in Thailand, Nepal and India after initially poisoning them and then mutilating their bodies so that they could not be recognised.

Speaking to The One Show s hosts Alex Jones and Jermaine Jenas on Monday, the actress called her character, whose real name was Marie-Andrée Leclerc, an incredibly complex woman .
The Victoria actress, 34, who looked stunning in a red turtleneck and she spoke via video, admitted she also found mastering the French language and accent particularly hard after garnering some criticism for it. Nadine and Remi Gires
Nadine (Mathilde Warnier) and Remi Gires (Grégoire Isvarine) were the French neighbours of Charles and Marie in Thailand.
At the time, Sobhraj was posing as a gem dealer and Leclerc as his wife Monique.
In the series, it is revealed Nadine would introduce Alain to potential clients, some of whom would end up as his victims.
Nadine was unaware of Alain s murderous streak, until Dominique Renelleau (Fabien Frankel), a Frenchman Alain was holding captive in his apartment was able to tell her his suspicions.
As seen in the series, Nadine and her husband Remi assisted Herman Knippenberg and Angela with their investigation into Sobhraj.
